October 29, 2024 - The York-East Rotary Club enjoyed an immersive presentation on the history and workings of the bagpipes as they welcomed special guest Duncan Moore, a professional bagpiper from Baltimore, MD, to their recent meeting. Moore dressed in traditional Scottish attire, shared insights into his instrument, Scottish heritage, and the legacy of bagpipes. Moore, who has been performing across Maryland and Pennsylvania for many years, gave attendees an in-depth look at the instrument's intricacies. He explained the mechanics of the bagpipes, demonstrating how air is blown into the bag and compressed to produce the unique sound of the pipes. Members gained a newfound appreciation for the skill involved as Moore described the delicate balance of maintaining airflow and steady pressure across the reeds. Alongside the technical details, Moore also delved into the rich history of bagpipes, tracing their origins in the Scottish Highlands and describing how they have become a symbol of Scottish identity. He discussed how bagpipes have historically been used in ceremonies and warfare, connecting communities and inspiring pride.
