August 21, 2024 — On Tuesday, community leaders Hannah Beard, Sarah O'Brien, and Bronley Martin, all representatives of Downtown Inc., presented their ongoing efforts to revitalize and promote the downtown York area at a meeting with the York East Rotary Club. Their presentation highlighted the organization's current projects and future initiatives aimed at making York a vibrant hub for business, culture, and community life.  Sarah O'Brien, Director, focused on the importance of community engagement in Downtown Inc.'s mission. O'Brien discussed the numerous events planned for the coming months, including the annual Yorktoberfest, a holiday market, and a series other events and concerts. "These events not only bring people downtown but also foster a sense of community," O'Brien explained. She noted that these activities are designed to appeal to a wide audience, from families to young professionals, ensuring that there is something for everyone. Hannah Beard, the Marketing Manager at Downtown Inc., emphasized the importance of supporting local businesses as the backbone of York's economic vitality. "Our goal is to create a thriving downtown where local businesses can flourish," Beard stated. She outlined several promotional campaigns, including the popular "Shop Small" initiative, which encourages residents and visitors to support York’s independent retailers. Beard also spoke about the use of social media and targeted advertising to draw attention to new and established businesses in the area. Bronley Martin, who leads Urban Development and Infrastructure for Downtown Inc., provided an update on several key projects that are reshaping the downtown landscape. Among the most significant is the ongoing streetscape improvement project, which aims to enhance walkability and aesthetic appeal. "Investing in our infrastructure is crucial for attracting both residents and businesses to the downtown area," Martin said. He also mentioned plans for the redevelopment of historic buildings into mixed-use spaces, which will include both residential units and retail spaces. The presentation concluded with a Q&A session, where Rotary Club members had the opportunity to ask questions and share their thoughts on the future of downtown York. The discussion was lively, with many expressing enthusiasm for the ongoing revitalization efforts and offering suggestions for future initiatives.
