Rotary Meeting Minutes
Sept. 20, 2021
The meeting began at 12:08 p.m.
After the invocation and song, President Matt Staub thanked the members for masking. He then provided us with:
- Gratitude to those who are technically caring for members in ‘zoom land’
- Introductions to new guests
- An update that we will not have the annual pancake breakfast fund-raising but will replace it with ‘Pancakes for a Purpose’. He encouraged members to add a few additional dollars to their Foundation donation
- An update about the PR committee meeting
- Encouragement to participate in the upcoming Rotary River Cruise
John Morefield introduced our speaker, Col. Chuck Allen (retired), professor of leadership and cultural inclusion, at the War College and a member of the Carlisle Rotary.
Professor Allen focused his comments on diversity, equity and inclusion as highlighted by the works and words of Martin Luther King, Jr. and how they are manifested in our Rotary membership. Professor Allen gave many examples of how MLK’s speeches could inform our personal journey in becoming more inclusive. In addition to providing personal experiences of growing up in Cleveland, OH during the civil riot riots in the mid- to late 1960s, he also applied many of MLK’s writings in support of Rotary’s Four Way Test.
Professor Allen successfully answered several questions asked by members related to diversity, equity and inclusion-related issues in the military and at the War College.
After questions were answered, President Staub thanked Professor Allen and presented him with our Club’s gift book. He then expressed gratitude to our membership for participating in today’s meeting and eagerly looks forward to seeing members on Monday, Sept. 27, 2021 when Ski, president of HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, will be the guest speaker updating the membership on our favorite community college.
The meeting ended at 1:00 p.m.
