Registration was requested by noon Thursday to assure that an appropriate amount of food and seating is available. However, we no longer require an RSVP to attend.
We'll hold an extended session of Good News Reporting at our club meeting on December 20! Bring your happy dollars and a fun story to share. Suggested donation is $20.00; however, a contribution in any amount is greatly appreciated!
The Rotary Club of Harrisburg met for its weekly meeting today at the Harrisburg Hilton. The meeting was called to order by President Matt Staub at 12:07 p.m. Invocation was given by Steve Schwartz followed by the Pledge of Allegiance, and our visitors were introduced by Wil Everhart, Jr. We had two visitors today: Susan Anthony introduced Deb Wire, retired from the Harrisburg School District, and Shaun Eng introduced Steve, who is an IT Director for the Harrisburg School District. Minutes today are being taken by Curt Stutzman.
Pancakes with a Purpose champion Andy Rebuck reported that we raised $24,950 through this fundraiser this year, which is even better than our goal of $23,000! Well done, Rotarians, and special thanks go to our many sponsors this year who helped us achieve this success. A drawing was held of those who submitted photos of pancake making, and the following members were selected. Bob Chamberlain, Vladimir Beaufils, Karen Paris, Bob Moore, Mike Eby, and Scott Stevens are the recipients of some pure maple syrup!
Our club is again a proud sponsor for the “Joy to the Burg” music fundraiser to support programs for the homeless in our area. To make a donation and get a copy of the CD, go to https://www.joytotheburg.com/. Keep in mind that we will still have our meeting next Monday, December 20 at the Hilton. Also that day, there will be a service project at the Central PA Food Bank at 5:00 p.m. A minimum of 15 persons is needed for a successful event, so sign up now if you can. You can do this online, or by emailing Sue Ward-Diorio. Also, at next week’s meeting we will have Good News Reporting. Bring your happy dollars and a fun story to share. Suggested donation is $20, but any contribution is greatly appreciated!
Chris Baldrige and Marion Alexander, representing the Harrisburg Public Schools Foundation, were pleased to present a check from our club for $15,000 to Superintendent Turnman. The speaker for today’s meeting was eloquently introduced by President Matt Staub. We were pleased to welcome Eric Turnman, superintendent of the Harrisburg School District. Mr. Turnman took this role earlier this year, and previously served at the Reading School System, where he led a dramatic turnaround. Eric shared in his introductory remarks that he plans to continue the progress made in recent years, help to return the District to normalcy through the last months of the COVID19 pandemic, and will work to bring the best out of everyone as the district moves forward. He presented a vision for the district that addresses a number of important areas.
Reshaping the lives of Harrisburg Students in Elementary Schools
Revamping the Middle Schools
Revamping the High Schools
Addressing needs in the Harrisburg Community
Affecting Social and Emotional Learning
There are grant funds available that the district has received that total over $83 million, and these funds will need to be used by October 2024. Plans are underway that include bringing some unused school buildings back on line and acquiring some new spaces to affect the changes planned. The plan is in the stage of gaining stakeholder feedback right now. For those interested in more details, Mr. Turnman indicated that a Facebook Live broadcast of this vision is being presented tomorrow for the Harrisburg community.
Following a short Q&A time, President Matt adjourned the meeting at 1:10 p.m. Be sure to read the Rotary Roundup to catch up on even more upcoming events affecting our very busy club! Have a blessed holiday season!
Meeting Format Changes
1. Staffed Buffet Instead of Banquet
Our club's board made the decision to revert to a staffed buffet, as the banquet-style luncheons have been causing logistical issues and distractions during meetings. The Hilton staff will wear masks and gloves, and we ask that all club members follow the CDC's indoor masking guidelines as well.
Please arrive 10-15 minutes early to allow yourself time to move through the buffet and be seated before President Matt calls the meeting to order at 12:00.
2. Registration Optional
Registration is encouraged, but no longer required to attend meetings in person. Pre-registering sends a calendar invitation to your email inbox and helps ensure that the appropriate amount of food is available.
3. Continue to Follow CDC Masking Guidelines
The CDC recommends that all individuals 2 years of age and older wear masks in public indoor settings in areas of "Substantial" or "High" transmission rates.
"In Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, community transmission is High Transmission.
Everyone should wear a mask in public indoor settings."
4. Virtual Meeting Available
Our Tech Team has been hard at work providing a high-quality virtual meeting experience for our club members and guests. If you are not vaccinated, not feeling well, or have a possible exposure to COVID-19, the club's board of directors kindly asks that you enjoy our virtual meeting experience instead of attending in person.
