Three Rotarian Physicians Honored

Dr. Busharat (Bush) Ahmad, M.D., a retired, highly-respected ophthalmologist, was recognized for his years of work as a Rotary Youth Exchange Officer. Throughout his 35 years of Rotary membership, he has administered youth exchange programs and he and his wife have been a host family for Rotary exchange students from around the globe.  Although his award related directly to Rotary youth service, it was also noted that he has also dedicated much of his career to providing free eye care to patients who would otherwise never receive eye examinations or treatment; and is active with two eye care clinics in Detroit, one of which he founded.  Dr. Ahmad was honored this year with the American Medical Association's Benjamin Rush Award for Citizenship and Community Service for his altruistic endeavors. Dr. David Mehregan, a leading dermatologist and 20-year Monroe Rotarian, was honored for providing free skin cancer screenings in the community since 1991.  Dr. Mehregan is a much sought after clinician and lecturer on dermatology and serves as Associate Chairman & Program Director of the department of Dermatology at the Wayne State University School of Medicine. He has served in several Rotary leadership positions, including club president.  Dr. Mehregan and his wife Susan, a Rotary Assistant District Governor, have served together on Rotary missions to Honduras, building schools, improving sanitation and working with children in San Pedro Sula.  David and Susan are both Rotary Foundation Benefactors and Plus Eight Fellows of the Rotary Paul Harris Society, which funds Rotary humanitarian, educational and world peace initiatives.

Monroe Urologist Ramachandran (Ram) S. Nair, M.D., was honored for his work in providing free prostate screenings and examinations.  Dr. Nair often serves as a photographer at Rotary events and activities, and is active in the Monroe community.  He was also recognized at the Doctor's Day special tribute at MercyMemorialHospital with membership in The Quarter Century Club – made up of physicians recognized for practicing medicine for 25 years or more.  An active Rotarian since 1981, Dr. Nair has been a generous and consistent contributor to The Rotary Foundation.  He is a Plus Eight Fellow of The Paul Harris Society.
