Monroe County Service Above Self Awards
Monroe, Michigan – Monroe Rotary is seeking nominations from the public for its 8th annual Service Above Self Award presentation. The award honors individuals, businesses and organizations that, in 2013, regularly volunteered their time and talents to enrich the lives of other Monroe County residents. Nominations may be made for individual adults and youth, for-profit businesses and not-for-Profit organizations in Monroe County.
Individual adults and youth to age 18 must have volunteered to benefit others beyond the normal scope of their occupation or school graduation requirements. Persons who live, work or attend school in Monroe County are eligible. Businesses, non-profits or civic organizations must have contributed to the betterment of the community beyond their routine business operation or mission statement.
Nominations will be accepted until March 28, 2014. Nomination forms, with criteria for the award and nominating information, can be found on the Monroe Rotary website home page at www.monroerotaryclub.com.
This award differs from the Monroe County Red Cross “Everyday Heroes” program. Rotarian and Service Above Self Award chairperson Terry Beamsley stressed that the award is not geared to recognize individual acts of heroism. “There are people and organizations in our communities routinely helping others. They help families in need, they volunteer their time to mentor others, they help young people become competent adults. Regardless of the specific action, they freely volunteer their time or support to benefit others. Rotary wants to recognize these wonderful, life-enriching individuals and organizations.”
Although Rotary sponsors and administers the Service Above Self project, it does not select the category winners. Nominations are reviewed by an independent panel of four currently-sitting or retired Monroe County jurists who select the category winners.
The Award Ceremony and Banquet will be held at Monroe County Community College on May 8, 2014. All persons and organizations nominated are honored at the Banquet, and the winners in each of the four categories are announced.
“One of the most striking qualities of people who exemplify ‘Service Above Self’ is modesty,” Beamsley noted. “That’s why it is so important that employers, employees, co-workers, friends and neighbors send us nominations. We can’t recognize these deserving organizations or individuals if we don’t know about them.”
