August 14 Meeting Busy! Whew!

The August 14 club meeting included the initiation of Ms. Renee Mullendore, a special visit from exchange students from Monroe's Sister City of Hofu, Japan along with Monroe students sent to Hofu; and the presentation of Rotary college scholarships.Pictured here: Monroe exchange students recently returned from two weeks in Japan. President Ryan Timiney ably led a full and exciting meeting with many moving parts.
Renee Mullendore was inducted as Monroe's newest Rotarian by President Timiney assisted by Renee's sponsor and Immediate Past President John Betrus. We wish Renee a long, full and rewarding Rotary experience.
The exchange of high school students has been a premier feature of the long-standing sister city relationship between Monroe, Michigan and Hofu, Japan. The Monroe and Hofu Rotary Clubs were instrumental in the founding of this rewarding joint venture from the inception. In the photo below we see (L-R) Monroe President Ryan Timiney, Japanese visiting students Kanyo Shimzu, Misaki Sunada, Natsumi Kihara, Mizuki Fujimura and Sora Yasumura, with Monroe Rotarian and exchange coordinator Susan Mehregan. Students gave and received commemorative gifts.
Two $1000 scholarships to Monroe County Community College were also awarded at the meeting. The two competitive scholarships focus on graduating seniors who have been involved in significant community service during their high school years, who are scholastic achievers and who have been accepted to Monroe County Community College. The application process includes a written essay regarding their community service, and in-person interviews with the Monroe Rotary Scholarship Committee chaired by David Bagnall. Winners of this year's competitive scholarships were Miracle Mason and David Stritt. Both are 2012 graduates of Monroe High School.
