A note from President Wendy with instructions on how to register to volunteer at the Stop Hunger Now event

Dear Club Members,
“Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.”
Helen Keller

I hope that you have managed to stay warm and healthy over the past few winter months. It is hard to believe that in a few short weeks we will come to the end of February and join together for our food packaging service project as we take a step to end world hunger.

Let me thank each and every one of you for working with the Lynn Rotary Club with your generous donations and/or volunteers to support the vision and mission of the the Stop Hunger Now Organization.

The event will be held on February 28th from 8:30-12 at St. Mary’s, located at 35 Tremont St in Lynn. Stop Hunger Now’s meal packaging program is a fun, hands-on international mission project where volunteers work in an assembly line to package high protein, vitamin rich meals. All the necessary arrangements have been made with the organization, so we are ready for the next step, which is to have all of our volunteers register.

Marc Vermouth, the NE Program Manager from Stop Hunger Now, has set up a registration website for us. It is a great tool for us to use for promoting the event and puts all of the event details in an easy format for our supporters and volunteers. I would like to ask you to have all of your club members who are going to join us that day register prior to the event at: http://events.stophungernow.org/Lynn

This registration process will help us keep track of how many volunteers we can expect that day and make the event check-in more organized and efficient on the day of the event. Also, on the day of the event, we suggest that volunteers dress casually and comfortably. Chairs will be available and provided for those who need to sit during the food packaging, or for those who need to take a break. We will have refreshments and water available for volunteers. It would be helpful that any volunteer who has a name badge wear it, otherwise a nametag will be provided at the event check-in.

If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me at wsilva@Easternbank.com or call me at 781-598-7982.
Thank you once again for all of you help,
President Wendy

Rotary Club recognizes 8th Graders

(Press release written by Mark Kennard)

The Lynn Rotary Club proudly celebrated the accomplishments and perseverance of 5 Lynn students as part of their annual 8th Grade Recognition Program at a recent meeting. The Lynn Club is part of a worldwide organization which brings together a global network of volunteer leaders who dedicate their time and talent to tackle the world’s most pressing humanitarian challenges. Their work impacts lives at both the local and international levels, from helping families in need in their own communities to working toward a polio- free world. The Lynn Club has celebrated the accomplishments of Lynn 8th graders for the past 15 years.

The 8th Grade Recognition Program was founded by a local Lynn Rotarian who felt that his experiences in middle school were instrumental in shaping his life as an adult. Like so many young people, he experienced significant obstacles in middle school both at home and in the classroom. With determination as well as support and guidance, .he was able to improve his academic achievement and ultimately became a successful student and person.

Each year, Lynn Rotarians celebrate the accomplishments of current 8th graders once a month from January to May. Each public and private junior high and middle school nominates a student who has overcome an obstacle in their lives, and at a special luncheon, also attended by family members and teachers; the honorees are recognized with a special award packet and certificate. The program is underwritten through an annual donation from the Riverworks Credit Union.

“The strength and perseverance of these young people is absolutely incredible”, notes Rotarian Mark Kennard, the Program Chairperson. “They teach us far more about courage and determination than we can possibly ever teach them.” He added, “ As one young woman recently said upon receiving her award,’ My journey is just beginning’. It is our honor to be a small part of each of their personal journeys”.

The Stop Hunger Now event is coming!

More than 250,000 volunteers have packaged meals through Stop Hunger Now's meal packaging program over the years.  It is a fun, hand's on mission project that is suitable for all ages.  Lynn Rotary has partnered with other Rotary Clubs, Lions Clubs, and church groups to put together the funds needed to package 10,000 meals.  Students from St. Mary’s will help with the packaging too.  The event will be held at St. Mary’s High School cafeteria on Saturday, February 28, 2015, from 8:00am to 12:00pm.

The assembly process combines rice, soy, dehydrated vegetables and a flavoring mix including 21 essential vitamins and minerals into small meal packages. These meal packages are shipped around the world to support school feeding programs and crisis relief. The food stores easily, transports quickly and has a shelf-life of two years.

A sign up sheet will be sent around soon, please consider signing up!!  Join the folks from those other groups in assembling these meals. It will be a great opportunity for service and fraternity with folks who also want to feed the poor.   Also, just think how cool we will look with those crazy hats, just like Past President Obie!
