Reminder of combined meeting in Lynnfield

This is a reminder that our weekly meeting on Thursday, November 13, 2014 will take place at the Sheraton Colonial Hotel in Lynnfield.  The meeting is a combined meeting with the Lynnfield and Saugus Rotary Clubs and the topic is about how to double our membership.  The address of the hotel is 1 Audubon Road, Lynnfield, MA 01880.  The meeting will start at noon as usual.  Looking forward to seeing you there!

Dr. Denise Hammon talks about Marian Court College

Dr. Denise Hammon recently addressed the Lynn Rotary Club about the mission and students of Marian Court College in Swampscott, Massachusetts.  Dr. Hammon talked about the history of the college which was founded in 1964 by the Sisters of Mercy as a two year secretarial school.  The college is now a four year bachelors degree granting school, offering degrees in Business Administration and Criminal Justice, as well as a number of associate in science degrees.  Members were interested in the facts of the school which has 62% women, a 66% diversity rate, and a 95% rate of first generation college students.

Besides the factual information about the school, members were most interested in the mission of the school and how it's mission evolved from it's roots as a school founded by the Sisters of Mercy.  Dr. Hammon explained that the school focuses on teaching, not research, thus helping them to keep tuition very affordable.  A large percentage of their students receive some kind of financial aid.

The college has tried to remove as many barriers as possible so that students would not be hindered from attending college.  As an example, food service has recently been instituted in this commuter college, so that students could eat on campus rather than have to travel.  Members were interested to learn about the mission of the school and to see how closely the concept of service to the students was so similar to our motto of "service above self".
