Stop Hunger Now Project explained to Lynn Rotarians

Mark Vermouth of Stop Hunger Now addressed the Lynn Rotary Club recently to explain the Stop Hunger program and to demonstrate how prepackaged meals are assembled by humanitarian and civic groups and distributed worldwide to areas in need.  The Lynn Rotary invited representatives from Rotary groups and other civic groups, such as the Lions Clubs, to join them in hearing the presentation and plans are being made for a number of groups to come together to fund a meal packaging event which would assemble a minimum of 10,000 meals.

Stop Hunger Now is an international hunger relief agency that has been fulfilling its commitment to end hunger for more than 15 years. Since 1998, the organization has coordinated the distribution of food and other lifesaving aid to children and families in countries all over the world.

Stop Hunger Now created its meal packaging program, in 2005. The program perfected the assembly process that combines rice, soy, dehydrated vegetables and a flavoring mix including 21 essential vitamins and minerals into small meal packets. Each meal costs only 29 cents. The food stores easily, has a shelf-life of two years and transports quickly. Stop Hunger Now works with international partners that ship and distribute the meals in-country.

Club members were interested in the program and are planning to join in an event sometime in early 2015, along with partners from other civic organizations and student volunteers.  Stop Hunger Now would supply the raw ingredients and teach volunteers how to package the meals.  Rotarians and other volunteer s will provide the funds and the manpower to build each meal.  When distribution of these meals occurs in the world, Stop Hunger Now will notify our coalition where the meals were sent.

Testimonials

“These children come from families that cannot supply even one meal a day for their children and don't understand the purpose of education... We do not consider these meals to be ‘charity,’ but a real investment in humanity.”
-  Mesi Anpil, Citihope International, Dominican Republic

“...You know you saved their lives. A child’s life.”
- Charles, 12 yr old meal packaging volunteer

“Doing this volunteer service was thrilling. It made me feel like I was part of something bigger than myself.
- Vanessa, Student at North Carolina State University

"One high school student who was very sick three months ago and had lost some weight, was given 3 bags of rice and bottle of oil twice a week after returning home from the hospital. The first week he gained one pound. Now he weighs 14 pounds more. His mom is raising 7 children by herself. His dad died some years ago. Truly the rice has saved his life."
- Haiti Outreach Ministries, Meal recipient

“I usually don’t like regular rice because it is not tasty. This time I’ve eaten it with great pleasure and wanted the additional portion. I feel happy now. I want to thank all aunts and uncles who send this food to us. We love you!”
- Fidan, a 5 year old a student at refugee kindergarten in Baku City, Azerbaijan

“For many children like me, the food we eat at Lakay is the only plate of food that we eat all day. With this food we are able to make sure that we won’t have to do bad things in the street in order to survive.”
 - High school student at Lakay School, Haiti

“Gladys Mudadi had been told by her grandmother at age 8 that both parents were dead from HIV/Aids.  Gladys’ grandmother died two years later and all relatives left her. She became homeless and helpless.  One of the schools took her in and has fed her and given her other things.  The food has greatly helped her diet and now she is strong and healthy.  She looks forward to school every day and is learning a lot.”
- School Administrator, Reach Now, Zambia

"I could hardly believe that residents in their late 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s were able to work so hard and so long. It just goes to show how much a worthy cause touches people’s heart and invigorates them with a sense of purpose and action.”
- Phyllis L. Mayo, Springmoor Life Care Retirement Community

“My personal thanks for working and caring to provide food and nutrition to those whom you
may never see.”
- Alex Pollak, Program Director of Change a Nation
