CPR Certification Course

CPR Certification Course

On Thursday, March 6, 2014, the Rotary Club of Lynn will sponsor a CPR Certification session for Rotarians and their guests.  Rotarians are encouraged to register so that they, or  their guests, can be prepared in an emergency.

This course will cover life saving techniques in CPR and will take place directly after the regular club meeting.  It will be conducted by certified trainers provided by Captain Joseph Zukas, EMS Director of the Lynn Fire Department.  The course is open to Rotary Club members and their guests.  There will be one instructor for every 10 participants, so registration is required for planning purposes.

Meals will be $15 for guests of Rotary members and visiting Rotarians.  The regular Club meeting, including lunch, begins at 12:15PM.  The Certification Course begins at approximately 1:00PM.

Registrations are closed as of 5:00 PM, Tuesday, March 4, 2014.

Rotarians must register themselves and their guests, so that a correct count can be given to both the Porthole (for the number of lunches) and to Captain Zukas (for the correct number of instructors).  Please register by the due date.1

President Obie takes the Plunge!

President Obie takes the Plunge for Polio Eradication!

On Saturday, February 1, 2014, President Obie Barker joined with 200+ other  crazy Rotarians and supporters  From District 7930 to plunge into the cold, cold, COLD Atlantic Ocean in order to raise funds for the eradication of polio in this world.  According to the District, the Plunge was a huge success.  Over $73,444 has been pledged through February 5th, and they are still accepting pledges.  The goal of the Plunge was to raise $100,000 and pledges are still coming in toward that goal.  Their slogan was “We were Freezin for a Reason!”.  With a 2-1 matching grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation, the District will be able to inoculate over 500,000 children from polio.  Donations can still be made to President Obie’s effort at this link:  https://www.fundraise.com/the-rotary-foundation-of-rotary-international/obie-barkers-fundraising-page

It was a great scene at the beach in Gloucester.  Hundreds of plungers and supporters gathered to support the plungers as they took the plunge.  Check out the photo album of President Obie and scenes from the event: PhotoAlbums/polio-plunge-fundraiser-for-polio-plus-1

Club members Bob Kennedy, Art Horgan, Rich Cuffe, and Steve Upton joined the crowd to support Obie and the other plungers.  The beach was full and great fun was had by all.  President Obie caught a break with the weather , the water was still COLD, but he helped raise important funds in spite of the hardship of the cold.  Thank you Obie for your leadership in this and your willingness to raise these funds.

Ever Wonder Why someone is "not worth his salt"?
Reprinted from "Ever Wonder Why?" by Douglas B. Smith

Why is he "not worth his salt"?
At one time soldiers in ancient Rome were paid, in part, with a ration of salt called a salarium, from the Latin word sal meeting salt.  If a soldier’s performance was not up to standard that soldier was said to be “not worth his salt”.

Later when the salt was replaced with a money allowance to buy the salt, the allowance itself was called a salarium.  Eventually salarium came to mean the wages themselves and this led to a higher calling ones pay a “salary”.
