The Lynn Rotary Club is part of a worldwide organization of business and professional leaders that provides humanitarian service, encourages high ethical standards in all vocations, and helps build goodwill and peace in the world. The main objective of Rotary is service — in the community, in the workplace, and throughout the world. Rotarians develop community service projects that address many of today's most critical issues, such as children at risk, poverty and hunger, the environment, illiteracy, and violence. For the past 25 years, "Polio Plus" a Rotary International Program with support from local clubs and now the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has worked diligently to eradicate the disease of polio from the earth.
We also support programs for youth, educational opportunities and international exchanges for students, teachers, and other professionals. The Rotary motto is Service Above Self.
The 8th grade student recognition award program is one of our club's most special and prized annual initiatives. This program was founded by Joe Coombs, a local businessman and Lynn Rotarian who felt that his experiences in middle school were instrumental in shaping his life as an adult Like so many young people Joe had some struggles in middle school both at home and in the classroom. A certain teacher saw him struggling and took the time to provide special support and guidance. The end result was that Joe was able to improve his academic achievement and ultimately he became a successful student and businessperson.
Four times a year we recognize 7 young people from our community who, each in their own way, has overcome an obstacle in their lives to achieve the same kind of success that Joe did many years ago. For all of those award recipients, we honor their will, their courage and their achievement.
