Rotarian John Stuart had a special interest in Indonesia. In 1978 he became aware of the work of the SOS Children's Village at Bandung in Java, which looks after orphaned children. John persuaded the club to send donations to help over a number of years. The first donation was $300. Eighteen years later, the village still thrives and, indeed, has been supplemented with two additional villages elsewhere in Java. In 1994, Past District Governor Nev Chambers visited the village, whilst on a business trip, and presented them with a donation of $100 'in memory of John Stuart'.
