Youth Service – New Generations

Every Rotarian an Example to Youth

In 1949, the Rotary International Board adopted the slogan "Every Rotarian an Example to Youth" as an expression of commitment to children and youth in each community in which Rotary clubs exist. Serving young people has long been an important part of the Rotary program.
Youth service projects take many forms around the world. 
Rotarians sponsor
  • Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops,
  • athletic teams,
  • centres for disabled children,
  • school safety patrols,
  • summer camps,
  • orphanages,
  • recreation areas,
  • safe driving clinics,
  • county fairs,
  • child-care centres,
  • and children's hospitals. 
 
Many clubs provide vocational counseling, establish youth employment programs, and promote the use of The 4-Way Test.  Increasingly, drug/alcohol abuse prevention and AIDS awareness projects are being supported by Rotarians.
 
In every instance, Rotarians have an opportunity to be role models and mentors for the young people of their community.  One learns to serve by observing others.  As our youth grow to become adult leaders, it is hoped each will achieve that same desire and spirit to serve future generations.
 
It is the responsibility of each Rotarian to prepare the New Generations - all young people up to the age of 30 - by improving their life skills to ensure a better future, while recognising the diversity of their needs.  All clubs and districts are encouraged to undertake projects that support the fundamental needs of the New Generations: health, human values, education, and self development.

Our District 9685

Rotary Clubs are incorporated entities under NSW law and must comply with Child Protection legislation as it applies to volunteers working with young people under the age of 18 years. Broadly, our District 9680 Youth Service programs fall into three categories -

    • Operation Hope (Wesley Mission Camps for disadvantaged children)
    • Youth Insearch (community-based organisation coordinating programs focusing on resolving adolescent issues at a peer level)
  • Programs initiated by Clubs to meet the needs of young people in their local communities
    • Scholarships, bursaries and awards for school students
    • Inter-school debating competitions
    • 'My Mother - My Hero' Mother's Day Essay/ Poem for Primary School students
    • Homeless youth programs
    • Community Centres for Youth
    • Youth Forums, ARH High School Forums on Mental Health (Years 10 & 11)
    • Youth Art Shows, Drama Festivals and Showcases of Musical Talents
    • Leadership training for High School Student Representative Council members
    • Support for students with disabilities - wheelchairs, computers, social outings

In Our Club - Youth Service!

The role of the Youth Service Committee is to recognise the positive change implemented by youth and young adults through leadership development activities and involvement in community. Our committee provides opportunities for growth and achievement by local youth and support for the "at risk" youth in the community. We encourage and support excellence in local community workplaces through vocational awards.
 
There are a huge number of Youth oriented projects that have been undertaken. The Rotary Club of St Ives has long been interested in the development of leadership in the Community, actively promoting 
 
There are also some non-Rotary organised groups that we support, and these include Operation Hope and Youth Insearch.
