A former Rotarian, then unemployed, became concerned at the plight of the Somalian people in the catastrophic drought of 1992. With the cooperation of St Ives, which he subsequently joined, he persuaded manufacturers to donate goods worth over $100,000 for shipment to Somalia. Many of these goods were items which the aid agencies had been unable to buy! With the assistance of World Vision and Singapore Airlines, the goods were air-freighted via Mombasa, Kenya, on 29 September 1992.
