Kelly represented our Club in the rain at the Silly Summer Parade over the long weekend. She ensured that none of the silly summer children got hurt in the bouncy castle.

Guest Speaker: Marilyn Mucha

2012 Rotary International Convention in Bangkok, Thailand

Marilyn shared her amazing experiences at the RI Convention last June. She was stuck by how all Rotarians, no matter how impressive their achievements, enter the convention as equals.

The Thai hosts lived up to their legendary hospitality and gave participants an opportunity to sample many aspects of their culture and cuisine. At 35,000 Rotarians, this was the most well-attended convention since the centenary in Chicago in 2005. Here is a link to the convention website: http://www.rotaryconvention2012.com/ The site has videos including the closing speech by RI President Kalyan Banerjee.

There were so many fascinating breakout sessions that it was hard for Marilyn to choose. She was particularly inspired by a session on membership strategy in North America. They discussed tactics to increase the diversity in club membership among ethnic, vocational, and sexual orientation guidelines.

The biggest achievement announced at the convention that India has been removed from the polio-endemic list. If India remains on this list for three years, the entire Southeast Asian region will be certified polio-free. Three nations remain polio-endemic: Nigeria, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. Since Rotary launched the Global Polio Eradication Initiative in 1988, polio cases have plunged 99% worldwide.
