Who's Who with Jennifer Laughton
Whyte Avenue members were excited to hear from our own Jennifer Laughton this past week. Jennifer told us about her family and Rotary journey. We were extremely interested to hear about her passion for forensic anthropology and her PhD work in Russia. Thank you for sharing Jenn! We are so fortunate to have you as a member of our club.
A Spooktacular Fellowship Event!
Whyte Avenue Rotary had a spooktacular time on a ghost walk on October 27th with Edmonton Ghost Tours. Our guide, Nadine, entertained us (from an appropriate social distance) with haunted tales of Old Strathcona. Look how terrified Stan is!
Pumpkins for Polio
Pumpkins for Polio was an online competition to raise funds to help eradicate polio. Participants purchased an $10 ticket through Eventbrite, carved a pumpkin, and shared their creations on social media using the hashtag #PumpkinsForPolio. The winners were decided by an online vote. 

🥇1st Place: Stan & Ewan
In addition to the Whyte Ave prize pack, a donation of $100 will be made in their name to the Rotary Foundation.

🥈2nd Place: Elizabeth Bonkink
A donation of $50 will be made to the Rotary Foundation in her name.
 
A couple of club members had fun while helping out The Mustard Seed last month by making sandwiches for people in the inner city who are in need. You can see their smiles even though they are wearing masks. 
Update from the Combined Rotary Women's School
In 2018, Whyte Avenue Rotary partnered with the Amarok Society and several other District 5370 Rotary Clubs to build the Combined Rotary Women's School in Bangladesh. In the school's latest update, they describe their struggles and challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Reshaping Rotary’s future with online learning
The COVID-19 pandemic has presented a challenge to the way Rotarians meet and provide training. But it has also provided an opportunity for Rotary to adapt and innovate.

We’ve seen that district and club leaders have turned to the Learning Center for resources and materials to help convert in-person training events to virtual learning sessions. Between April and June 2020, the number of people using the Learning Center rose from 2,800 per month to 10,000.

Some highlights of how the Learning Center has grown from its August 2018 relaunch to June 2020 include:
  • Members took more than five times as many courses in June 2020 as they did in August 2018.
  • The zones with the highest course completion rates are in Asia, Africa, and South America.
  • Our most popular courses are Getting Started With the Learning Center, Rotary Club Central Resources, and Protecting Personal Data.
  • In districts that receive Learning Center reports, an average of 9.3% of members use the Learning Center — four percentage points higher than districts that don’t receive reports. If you’re a governor, district trainer, district membership chair, or district Rotary Foundation committee chair, take the Access to Learning Center Reports course to get access to reports.

Rotarian at Work t-Shirts
Tamara Larsen has generously donated Rotarian at Work T-shirts to our club. She has them available in a variety of sizes and two different styles. They are $10 and funds collected will be donated to Polio eradication. Contact Tamara to get your t-shirt!
