On Tuesday, January 5, we had two guests from Norquest College to speak with us about their LINC and YIT programs: Molly Garstad and Cindy Fowler. 

LINC (Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada)

The student population is "like the United Nations" according to Molly Garstad; the student base is comprised of 143 different countries and is 65% female. 

Many students coming to Canada need support in transitioning to their new home. YIT is a program for students aged 17 to 24. Tuition is fully funded therefore there are no tuition costs. Each student is also given a bus pass for transportation. Every 8 weeks, there is a new influx of students into the program. Although it is a 10 month program, some students take more time to complete. This supports the mandate of Norquest in regard to "fulfilling vision and changing lives". 

Not only are academic subjects taught, the students are offered mentorship opportunities. EPCOR sponsors a lunch once a month, addressing different topics, and mentors are present to work with students. This includes life skills such as banking, goals, time management, resumes, mock interviews, study skills and more. 

Once the YIT program is completed, students move on to further their education either through LINC, academic upgrading or into diploma programs at Norquest, NAIT and other institutions.
