Poundmaker's Lodge Treatment Centres

On Tuesday, Feb 28, our regular meeting was moved to Sturgeon County where members gathered at Poundmaker's Lodge Treatment Centres for a guided tour by Lacey Kasmaker.

Poundmaker’s Lodge is known as Canada’s first addictions treatment centre specifically for Aboriginal clients and is known as a "Healing Place".

While programs focus on Aboriginal culture and spirituality, clients from all cultures, traditions and faiths are welcome.

Their Mission Statement is:

"Healthy communities are free from addictions and support balanced lifestyles"

Currently three programs are offered:
  • a 42-day Residential Treatment Program designed for adults;
  • a 90-day program specifically designed for young adults between the ages of 18 to 24 years;
  • the Iskwew Healing Lodge, an aftercare facility for women

Traditional activities such as smudging and sweat lodges accompany educational and group therapy sessions, hiking, and other physical activities.

Every second Friday sweat lodges are open to the public.

Lacey was a great tour guide, introducing us to onsite volunteers and staff, answering questions about treatment success, funding, and medical services provided by the University of Alberta Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry.

A very beneficial tour for all.

Thank you to everyone who could make it!

MS Walk

We had the distinct honor and pleasure of hearing from young Rotary leader, Ben Turner, about his personal journey with MS. Thank you Ben for sharing your personal story and letting us know how we as a club can support you and others that are dealing with the challenges of MS.

Ben is reaching out to his Rotary family to join him in raising funds for MS on the Walk for MS on Sunday, May 28. Let's support Ben and all those who need our help by entering a team and fundraising. What a FUN event, fellowship opportunity and a way to serve humanity and make a difference.

As requested, the following is a link to the MS Walk for Edmonton, 2017. The event date is May 28th at Rossdale Community Field. Follow the link to set up your team so that your club members can sign up and begin fundraising.

Looking forward to being a part of this walk on May 28!
