This year, the Rotary Foundation is celebrating 100 years of doing good in the world! In celebration of this great accomplishment, many exciting activities are taking place in Rotary clubs and Districts around the world. Our club is no exception. Our first annual Pool for Polio was a huge success and we look forward to this becoming an annual event.

 

The Rotary Foundation has been named one of the top three charities in the world by Charity Navigator.

 

November is Foundation Month. It is a time for us to learn about all the good our contributions do and the many opportunities we as a club have to participate in as we serve humanity in so many different ways. On Tuesday, November 22, we will be having a very special meeting. We will be joined by Wayne McCutcheon, District Grants Chair and Wayne Kauffman, District Foundation Chair as they speak to us about the Rotary Foundation. Patrick Gibson, District Polio Chair, will be joining us as a guest and bringing a block of tickets to the Edmonton Oil Kings - PolioPlus in January as we launch this challenge for members of our club. There will also be a special presentation to one of our members for their contributions to the Foundation and Rotary.

Kevin Ku, our inbound youth exchange student, presented to us last night about his home country Taiwan, his family and more about his life. Kevin did a great job and we had such a great time hearing from him! Kevin's exchange and Canadian experience is quite unique. He is sponsored by five Rotary clubs; we are his host club and are providing two host families. The Rotary Club of Edmonton Mayfield is providing a host family as well as financial support. He is also supported financially by the eClub Canada One, Edmonton West and Fort McMurray Oil Sands!

 

Our first annual Pool for Polio took place on Tuesday, November 8 at The Billiard Club on Whyte Avenue. We were joined by family and friends, other Rotarians and Rotaractors from our District. Special guests included District Polio Chair Patrick Gibson, District Governor Laura Morie and Past District Governor Jackie Hobal.

 

Along with the doubles pool tournament, we heard from Jackie Hobal about her personal journey as a polio survivor and how it impacted her family and her life. Thank you Jackie for taking time out of your busy schedule to join us!

 

There was some great bidding on our silent auction items! The net proceeds from ticket sales, donations by our guests and the silent auction items, we raised $2400! With matching grants from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Government of Canada (5:1), the total contribution going towards the Polio Eradication cause is $9600! Congratulations everyone on such a successful event and helping eradicate polio world wide. We are THIS CLOSE!
