Whyte Avenue Rotary Newsletter for the Week of February 16th (Feb 13, 2021)

This week we had Dan Rude, Chief Executive Officer of the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association (AUMA), as our guest speaker. AUMA was established in 1905 to represent Alberta’s urban municipalities, including cities, towns, villages, summer villages, and specialized municipalities. Dan talked about how the AUMA supports and advocates for Alberta municipalities to help build more vibrant communities. This multi-faceted organization does so many things and we all learned a lot. Thank you for being our speaker Dan!

Several District 5370 Rotary clubs, including the Whyte Avenue Rotary Club, and individual Rotary members contributed to raise the $10,000 USD required to fund a Global Grant Scholarship for Anna-Marie Robertson. Global Grant Scholarships fund graduate-level coursework or research for one to four academic years and Anna-Marie will be using this scholarship to support her studies at Georgetown University where she will be studying international law. Global grant scholars plan to pursue a career in one of Rotary's area of focus and Anna-Marie's studies align with the peace and conflict prevention/resolution area of focus. Congratulations Anna-Marie! We can't wait to have you come talk to our club about your research and your experiences.

The Rotary Club of Edmonton Whyte Avenue loves doing hands-on volunteering. Making meals for the families in the Edmonton RMH is one of our favourite volunteer activities. With COVID-19 restrictions, we can't volunteer in person, so we are fundraising to donate the funds that we would have put toward making meals for the house this year. When we volunteer in person it would have cost our club approximately $250 for the food to make a meal for the house. Our goal is to fundraise enough to cover the cost of two meals.

What is a Rotary Foundation Global Grant for Vocational Training?

Established in 1965-66, the Group Study Exchange Program was an educational program that promoted international understanding through organized travel and personal contact. The program evolved as Rotary updated its grant model and placed this activity within global grants. Vocational training under global grants builds skills within a community by offering local training or by supporting groups of professionals traveling abroad for rigorous study in their profession or to teach local professionals about a particular field. This type of training is often effective in conjunction with a humanitarian project.
