October 24 is World Polio Day!

At the end of the 1980s, more than 350,000 children were paralyzed by polio every year. Today, Rotary and its partners have reduced the incidence of polio by 99.9 percent. However, until we see the last of the poliovirus, eradication efforts need additional funding to:

  • Immunize more than 400 million children against polio every year
  • Improve disease surveillance systems to detect any polio virus in a person or in the environment
  • Hire more than 150,000 health workers to go door to door to find every child
You can help end polio by making a gift to the PolioPlus Fund at endpolio.org.
Rotary YEG Passport Club invites you to join its Walk to End Polio on Sunday October 25th.
This 2.5 km walk will be led by Rotarian John Vrolijk (RC of YEG Passport), who at an early age was diagnosed with polio. As part of his treatment, John spent seven months in an iron lung.

Participants should meet at  Picnic Site #2 in Hawrelak Park at 9:30 a.m. Walk start time: 10:00 a.m.

Cost: We are asking all participants to purchase an End Polio T-shirt for $20.T-shirts will be available on-site. All proceeds will go toward the Rotary International End Polio Now campaign.

Club Assembly
Last week Whyte Avenue Rotary members met online to review the financials from the previous Rotary year, provide committee updates, and review the results of the annual club survey. In spite of the challenges of COVID-19, there are still so many exciting things happening in our club!

Some highlights of the club survey:
  • Club members feel like being part of Rotary is worthwhile, club members care about one another, and there is effective communication in the club
  • Club members are most interested in doing hands on community service
  • Club members particularly want to hear from speakers who discuss local community issues and about other Rotary projects
  • The club needs to develop a signature fundraising event and needs to create more opportunities for fellowship
  • Club members feel most comfortable continuing to meet online until the pandemic is over
Reshaping Rotary’s future with online learning
The COVID-19 pandemic has presented a challenge to the way Rotarians meet and provide training. But it has also provided an opportunity for Rotary to adapt and innovate.

We’ve seen that district and club leaders have turned to the Learning Center for resources and materials to help convert in-person training events to virtual learning sessions. Between April and June 2020, the number of people using the Learning Center rose from 2,800 per month to 10,000.

Some highlights of how the Learning Center has grown from its August 2018 relaunch to June 2020 include:
  • Members took more than five times as many courses in June 2020 as they did in August 2018.
  • The zones with the highest course completion rates are in Asia, Africa, and South America.
  • Our most popular courses are Getting Started With the Learning Center, Rotary Club Central Resources, and Protecting Personal Data.
  • In districts that receive Learning Center reports, an average of 9.3% of members use the Learning Center — four percentage points higher than districts that don’t receive reports. If you’re a governor, district trainer, district membership chair, or district Rotary Foundation committee chair, take the Access to Learning Center Reports course to get access to reports.

Foundation Moment

PolioPlus is a Signature Program of The Rotary Foundation

PolioPlus is Rotary’s priority program which supports global efforts to eradicate polio. It was launched in 1985, with the help of Dr. Albert Sabin, developer of the oral polio vaccine, as a worldwide program to protect children from the cruel and fatal consequences of polio. In 1988, the World Health Assembly challenged the world to eradicate polio, and since that time, Rotary’s efforts, along with partner agencies, including the World Health Organization, UNICEF, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and governments around the world have achieved a 99 percent reduction in the number of polio cases worldwide.

As of 2018-19, The Rotary Foundation has raised over US$1.6 billion for polio eradication. By the time the world is certified polio-free, our contributions will make Rotary the largest non-governmental financial contributor to the global polio eradication effort.

You can help end polio by making a gift to the PolioPlus Fund at endpolio.org.
