On Tuesday, November 23, District Governor Tim Schilds, and his wife Sally, came to visit our club. He met with the Leadership Team on Monday evening and then spoke with our members about how we are "Being a Gift to the World".

 

The time, talents, energy and enthusiasm of our club is truly making an impact; Dinner Club at the Neighbor Centre, Hockey Night on Whyte street tournament, Scholarship and Mentorship program, winter clothing drive and so much more.

 

Each Rotarian has a heart for service; our club has a big heart and each member brings unique skills and talents to our projects and avenues of service. Not only does each member brings gifts to Rotary, Rotary brings gifts to each member. When reaching out to the community and new members, look for those who have a heart for service and tell the story of how Rotary brings gifts to everyone.

 

The Rotary Foundation is the engine that drives this international service organization. Each contribution is the gas and oil that makes this engine work. Every contribution is important! Our club has reached many milestones this year in regard to Foundation goals and is making a difference in every way.

 

In honor of this visit from Tim and Sally, it was crazy hat day!

We are proud to introduce our newest member: Guiscela Perez Arellano.

 

Here bio:

 

Guiscela Perez Arellano is 27 years old. And originally from Durango, Mexico located just two hours inland from Mazatlan.  My father, my mother and my only brother are still in Mexico. My parents are both architects and my brother is studying to become an architect as well.
 
In 2004 she was an exchange student with Rotary International to Germany and had the opportunity to travel abroad and discover a whole new world in Europe. Having obtained a degree in Public Relations in Guadalajara, she has worked in a variety of positions including teaching Public Relations, German, English and French for 2 years.
 
In 2012 she came to Canada only to visit her boyfriend for the holidays and has stayed ever since, working as an au pair (nanny). Guiscela has now applied for permanent residency, recently received her work permit and is working as a Front Desk Agent at the Courtyard West Edmonton by Marriott.
 
She states that Rotary opened the doors for her to travel and appreciate how important is to be less self absorbed and give back a little to our community.
 
She wants to join Rotary, because she believes an organization such as Rotary with local and as well as international scope allows her to achieve what i have always wanted, to help others. The best part is that she won't have to do it alone, but will be part of a club with the same ideologies and objectives!

 

Welcome Guiscela!

 

As you may have already heard, we are going to receive the proceeds from the Old Strathcona Sleigh Rides this year. 

 

This could raise a tidy sum for our Club. 

 

All we need to do is have 2 volunteers at each of the 4 stops between 1pm and 5pm on three Saturdays in December - the 5th, the 12th and the 19th.

Can you spare a Saturday afternoon to help raise some money and have some fun? 

 

I plan to bring a friend to my shifts. 

 

It will be fun to share good cheer together and with shoppers using the Sleigh Rides. 

 

Who knows, a little fun may inspire the generosity in everyone.  

 

If you are concerned about being cold, the Sleigh Rides are canceled if the temperature (with wind chill) reaches -25.
