Spreading Holiday Cheer with the Skills Society!

Members and friends of the Rotary Club of Edmonton Whyte Avenue were spreading holiday cheer early this year when they got together to prepare holiday stockings for the Skills Society!  The Skills Society is a community partner that provides much needed support services to children and adults with developmental disabilities, survivors of acquired brain injury, and their families. For the fourth year in a row, the Rotary Club of Edmonton Whyte Avenue collected donations for a whopping 110 holiday stockings for people supported by the Skills Society’s Outreach Program.  Volunteers then went to the Skills Society on Thursday to assemble these great gifts for people in need!

Thank you to Kristin and Paige for organizing this fantastic community service event, thank you to the Skills Society for inviting us to their office so we could assemble the stockings together as well as a HUGE thank you to everyone who donated and volunteered! Because of your hard work and donations, a great group of people in need are receiving a fantastic gift this year. This event could not have happened if it were not for all of your help, contributions, and support so thank you all for making this holiday season a bit more merry for so many people!

Learning About a More Walkable Edmonton with Paths for People

 
This past Tuesday, the Rotary Club of Edmonton Whyte Avenue was joined by Sarah Hoyles, the Executive Director for Paths for People. Sarah came to our club and talked about Paths for People and how this non-profit works to connect with people of all ages to strengthen the voices of Edmontonians in support of creating a walkable and bike-friendly city that’s human-centred by design.
 
She talked about some of their exciting events, most notably the 'open streets' event held on Jasper this past Summer.  Sarah talked about how Paths for People worked to close Jasper for a few hours and plan activities and how their hard work led to having over 10,000 people come out to join open streets!  Paths for People is planning similar events in the future, including another open streets event on Whyte Ave this summer. 
 
Sarah also talked about how much Paths for People wants to support other organizations who are interested in making a more people-centered Edmonton and is open to collaboration.

Rotary Whyte Ave's Amazing Award Winning Rotarians!
 
This past Tuesday, we celebrated two amazing Rotarians for their incredible contributions to the club and the community.
 
Tamara Larson Recognized as a Major Donor
Our very own Tamara Larson was recognized by Rotary for her incredible commitment and support to the Rotary Foundation.  Due to her support for the vision and goals of the Rotary Foundation, Tamara was named as a Major Donor and was presented the Major Donor Crystal! As a Major Donor, Tamara joined a global group of humanitarians united in their passion of service. Congrats Tamara!‬
 
Tim Onciul Awarded Rotary Whyte Ave's Whyte Knight Award
On Tuesday, we recognized the incredible work of Tim Onciul with the Whyte Knight Award. Tim was the inaugural recipient of the award in May of 2016 and is our first ever two time Whyte Knight Award winner. Tim received the award again last Tuesday for his continued passion to help youth in our community. The dodgeball tournament in support of Youth Empowerment Support Services (YESS) was a success because of Tim’s vision and commitment. Congrats Tim!
 
Rotary is full of amazing, hard working people and were incredibly lucky to have such an amazing group of people in our club!  Thank you all for all the work you do!
Join Us on December 17 for the Rotary Christmas Party!

You and your guests are invited to the Rotary Club of Whyte Avenue's annual holiday celebration! The decorations are up, there's snow on the ground, now all we need is good friends gathered around!

This year’s party is sure to be a blast as we are featuring the following:

  • Wear your Christmas Best (wear everything from your ugly Christmas sweaters to your best holiday gear)
  • Secret Santa Gift Exchange (bring a wrapped gift of approx. $10 to participate) 
  • Holiday photo booth
  • Appetizers, cash bar, & more!
  • And of course, great people!
