KidSport Edmonton
Dayna Hyman, Executive Director of KidSport Edmonton, was our club guest speaker on November 24th. KidSport Edmonton is a local non-profit organization that subsidizes sport registration fees for kids who live at or below the poverty line. Providing local kids with access to sport helps achieve KidSport's goal to make it "So ALL Kids Can Play!" Dayna described the work her organization does and how it benefits those who receive KidSport funding. The video testimonials from those who have been given opportunities to play sport by KidSport were powerful and moving. Dayna also shared the challenges KidSport is facing during the COVID-19 pandemic and how they are pivoting to address those challenges. Thanks for sharing with us Dayna!
December 1 is Giving Tuesday
December 1st is a day of global giving and is an opportunity for Rotarians and Rotaractors to make a big impact with a small gift to the Foundation's Annual Fund. When you give to The Rotary Foundation, you fuel our service projects - projects that eradicate polio, promote peace, and improve developing communities.
Global Grant Scholarship
Kassia Fardoe has been attending London School of Economics (LSE) as a Global Grant Scholar with support from our club and other Rotary clubs in the district. She was pursuing a Master of Science in International Development and Humanitarian Emergencies and she recently passed her dissertation with merit and got distinction in all of her classes!
We are looking forward to having her speaking to our club about all of her experiences.
Fresh Routes at The Neighbour Centre
We are excited for the launch of a new initiative from the Neighbour Centre. The Neighbour Centre is one of Whyte Avenue Rotary's community partners and we are thrilled to have been able to help support the Fresh Routes program.
Dinner to Door Deliveries with The Mustard Seed
When the pandemic was declared, the Mustard Seed meal service was halted due to restrictions enacted by AHS. Unfortunately, this meant that the usual 200-400 recipients of meals at their 96th Street location could not be served. It took a little over two weeks for the service agency to adapt to the restrictions and find a way to engage volunteers in a safe way to get meals out to those in need with the Dinner 2 Door program launching officially on April 1.
Arrangements were made for volunteer teams to cook at their facility in a safe, socially distant manner. Volunteers were engaged for meal delivery every weeknight with approximately 228 packages of cooked meals heading out to community members experiencing food insecurity.
Our club, with support of friends of the club and members of the YEG Passport Club has successfully delivered pre-made meals every Thursday for the past six weeks and will continue to deliver meals until the end of the month (with one volunteer spot still available on November 26th). Thanks to everyone for stepping up and helping our neighbours in need.

Rotary’s Areas of Focus (Part 1 of 2)

Rotary is dedicated to seven areas of focus to build international relationships, improve lives, and create a better world to support our peace efforts and end polio forever.

•           Promoting peace: Rotary encourages conversations to foster understanding within and across cultures. We train adults and young leaders to prevent and mediate conflict and help refugees who have fled dangerous areas.

•           Fighting disease: We educate and equip communities to stop the spread of life-threatening diseases like polio, HIV/AIDS, and malaria. We improve and expand access to low-cost and free health care in developing areas.

•           Providing clean water, sanitation, and hygiene: We support local solutions to bring clean water, sanitation, and hygiene to more people every day. We don’t just build wells and walk away. We share our expertise with community leaders and educators to make sure our projects succeed long-term.

Learn about the other four next week!
