We were very fortunate to play host to some distinguished guests and alumni from the University of Alberta for our last meeting of 2017.

Sean Price, Associate Vice President of Alumni Affairs, brought along Alumni Council President Ayaz Bhanji and a number of Council Member to share their perspectives on the University of Alberta as one of Canada's premiere post-secondary institutions, and also on its impact on their lives after graduation.

University of Alberta Senate representative Stephen Leppard gave a presentation that was filled with an astonishing array of facts about the university:

  • Pioneered  Hepatitis B oral treatment
  • World-leading MS research
  • Recognized internationally for work in the field of Artificial Intelligence.
  • At the forefront of Indigenous Studies, with one of the only accredited faculties in North America
  • Extensive outreach programming for underprivileged children, gender and LGBTQ relations, hands-on learning opportunities for children, and more
  • Through TEC Edmonton, partnered with Edmonton Economic Development to turn U of A research into 22 spin-off companies
  • Ranked among Canada's top five universities, and the top 100 in the world
  • U of A grads have the highest employment rate in the country

It's great to think that this world-class institution is just down the street, and closely connected to Whyte Avenue Rotary!
