On Tuesday, February 2, we had the privilege of hearing from Jodi Stonehouse in regard to Moving the Mountain program; a partnership between the University of Alberta, iHuman and Harvard University.

This program focuses on 25 aboriginal young women ages 13 to 25. Alberta had the highest number of Residential schools in Canada. Today, many aboriginal youth and their families are facing challenges as inter generational survivors. They face abuse, many have been cycled through the foster system, are now homeless and so much more.

Moving the Mountain works to assist these young aboriginal women in many ways:

    •    harm reduction program
    •    self directed learning to assist in getting them a high school diploma; as many are illiterate, this is a very important key to helping them overcome life obstacles
    •    address their addiction issues
    •    mentorship

It has been proven that in order to break this cycle of poverty, addiction and abuse, education is the key factor. This program accepts these young women simply as they are.

Moving the Mountain program is at capacity. They are searching for the following to be successful: funding for a program coordinator, classroom resources, mentors, groceries, shoes, toiletries and more.
