This past Tuesday, Rotary Whyte Ave members and friends learned about the Edmonton Police Commission (EPC) from current EPC commissioner and former Member of Parliament Laurie Hawn.

Laurie talked about the positive dynamic between the EPC and the Edmonton Police Service (EPS). Guests learned how the EPC and the EPS are different but nevertheless share a common vision of responsive community policing. The EPC, among its many functions, oversees the police service; responds to citizens’ concerns on policing matters; helps to develop the annual policing plan and budget; and works to build positive relationships with community partners. Laurie also discussed the process in selecting the new police chief and the future goals of the EPC.

The speaker and guests then had a robust conversation on the importance of having a police force that is representative of Edmonton's diverse population and how to ensure positive relationships within that community. This conversation was greatly complimented by EPS executive director and new member Enyinnah!

Thank you to Laurie Hawn for coming to speak and to everyone who made it out!
