Strini Reddy, from the Rotary Club of Winnipeg, and Rob Campbell, from the Rotary Club of Hillcrest in South Africa, were our guest speakers on Tuesday January 12th. They described the familiar impact that the COVID-19 pandemic has had in South Africa, resulting in unemployment, business failures, school closures, and social isolation. With little income and sparse government assistance, women are faced with providing food for their families by growing their own food. The 1000 Survival Gardens project aims to address this need by providing women in South Africa with a survival garden kit to help them create food security and self-sufficiency during and after the pandemic. The kit includes the ingenious Hippo Roller, which allows women to more easily transport water, and the tools and seedlings to start small vegetable gardens.
