Below are notes from the Rotary meeting last week (October19) recorded by Judy Ackland, President-Elect:
- Rolly opened with prayer and led the pledge of allegiance
- No guest Rotarians or other guests
- Rita reported $6,231.59
- Mike encouraged everyone to read the newsletter.
- Pantry packing was the night before the meeting. Helping were Pres. Mike & his wife, Diane & her husband, and somebody else but I can’t remember who. L
- Neil collected fines
- President’s question of the day was “What is the plural for moose?” Just about everyone knew the answer: moose.
- Speaker was Mary Ann Borgeson, introduced by Tod.
- She passed out a brochure “Counties Matter” from the National Association of Counties
- She also distributed Douglas County health cards
- Does not replace insurance
- Provides discounts on
- Prescriptions
- Medical providers
- Dental
- She discussed the space issue at the courthouse, particularly given the directive from the Legislature to increase the number of county judges
- Working on partnership with MUD building next to courthouse to house some of the County offices

- Seven districts
- Commissioners serve four year terms
- When she was elected, the county did not have a mission statement or strategic plan but now they do
- Majority of the County employees are unionized. Commissioners have a good relationship with the unions.
- Public safety eats up almost 40% of the annual budget.
- Tax rates have stayed fairly level even with the new bond issue (old bond issue was paid off so levies for that just were switched to the new bond)
