Longtime Glenwood resident, 175-year-old John Y. Stone, recently visited the club attired in his Civil War uniform - having enlisted in 1861 and mustering out as a first lieutenant in 1865. John regaled members with some exciting “war stories” about serving under General Grant at Shiloh and Vicksburg and under General Sherman in Atlanta and on the way to Savannah.
After the War John returned to Mills County first as a journalist becoming editor, co-owner, and publisher of the Glenwood Opinion. He then read law and was admitted to the bar in 1868 eventually becoming one of Iowa’s foremost attorneys - as well as a member of both houses of the Iowa legislature, the Speaker of its House, and then Iowa Attorney General from where he left public service in 1895. Members felt honored indeed to share a meal and some time with someone of such stature as the Honorable John Y. Stone (respectfully played by fellow Rotarian Stan Sibley).
