This year our club decided to extend its reach at Christmas and donated $250 to an Omaha nonprofit called Toy Drive for Pine Ridge. That amount should provide enough propane to keep a Lakota Sioux family on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in southwest South Dakota warm for the winter.
The Toy Drive for Pine Ridge is a nonprofit organization that collects and delivers toys in early December to children on the reservation and also raises donations for heating, clothing, food, and educational resources for reservation residents throughout the year.
The Toy Drive started in 2003 with Larry Dunn—an Omaha musician also known as Lash LaRue—a friend and a small pick-up truck. With each year the nonprofit expanded its reach on Pine Ridge and is now providing, in addition to the toys, assistance for elders including a vital propane heating fund, educational resources for three schools, and resources including heating to a medical clinic.
Because of the phenomenal growth of the Toy Drive, each year Larry adds more fundraisers—concerts and other events, such as a radiothon—in and around Omaha. Learn more at toydriveforpineridge.org
