The Bill and Berniece Grewcock Animal Hospital
Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium recently opened the Bill and Berniece Grewcock Animal Hospital, a 32,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility built to support the depth and complexity of modern zoological medicine. The new hospital replaces a facility that was nearly 30 years old and now equips the Zoo's animal health team to care for the more than 39,000 animals at the Zoo, from invertebrates to large mammals.
The hospital brings together core medical services under one roof, including dedicated spaces for quarantine and hospitalization, intensive care unit wards, and an animal diet kitchen. It also houses a fully equipped pharmacy and in-house clinical pathology laboratory to support rapid diagnostics, along with two treatment rooms and a sterile surgical suite for care ranging from routine exams to complex medical cases.
Among its most notable features is the Zoo's first-ever computed tomography (CT) scanner, which significantly enhances diagnostic imaging and clinical decision-making, along with additional technology supporting advanced, minimally invasive procedures that expand treatment options while reducing recovery time.
The facility also has an educational and training mission. The Zoo was recently approved for a residency training program, one of fewer than 25 such programs in the world, allowing the Zoo to train the next generation of zoo veterinarians in Omaha. The hospital's design even includes a viewing platform for scheduled group visits, giving audiences a unique window into the work happening there.
