Dear fellow Rotarians,

I hope that you enjoyed the month of love and that you took time to reflect and appreciate why world peace and Understanding starts with you. Having done that, March in the Rotary Fraternity is designated to Literacy. Having had attended a Village Primary School for  two terms, I learned to appreciate many things such as the need to have reading materials, because the students of that school when compared to the ones I went to much later after passed solely with the efforts of the teachers. I recently made a tour of the same Primary School and the statusquo remains. I promised myself that before my term ends as President, a small library should be launched in this primary School as my contribution but more so my vocation as a Librarian.

March is also special in a way that our new generation is recognized through the Rotaract Week and this is the time that we recognize the importance and success of the Rotaract Programme. Let us visit our Rotaract Clubs and support them in every way possible.

Back to the theme of the month, President Ron calls upon us to embrace the reading culture in our communities and those beyond our borders. We all know that our levels of basic literacy and education are still wanting. It is our call as Rotarians to do something about this state of affairs; it can start by such small things as donating a book, a newspaper, reading a book to a group of young people as the list goes on and on.

As Rotarians in general, there are several other ways that we can assist in helping the literacy situation improve, like adopting a school, teacher training, improve access to books and learning as well as promoting Community Development.

My dear Rotarians, it’s my prayer that you consider doing one or two things during this month as a kind gesture towards improving the lives of our less privileged especially the young generation.
