Fellowship at Cineplex cinema
“If it wasn’t for Rotary, some of us would never have been to the cinema”, said one Rotarian who preferred not to be named, at the end of one of Rotary Club of Kiwatule’s Movie Nights.
As part of its activities to raise funds for its various service projects, Rotary Club of Kiwatule conducts fellowship@Cineplex Cinema (Garden City), every last Wednesday of the month. This fundraising drive started October 27, 2010 when the Management of Cineplex kindly accepted to host the monthly movie night which continues to attract members of Rotary Club of Kiwatule, Rotarians & Rotaractors from other Clubs, Club guests, and Corporate Companies.
The movie goers gladly part with the equivalent of $5 for the movie with the satisfaction that part of the proceeds will support the club’s monthly medical outreach camp directed towards the urban poor living in Kiwatule, one of Kampala’s suburbs. The Club introduced the free medical outreach in 2003, as a general outpatient camp, but this has since grown to also cover aspects of dental services, HIV Counselling & Testing, sensitisation on sanitation & health, cancer parades, distribution of free mosquito nets and sensitization on financial literacy, especially micro-finance, for which more support is needed from more Corporates.
Club Members say the movie night is a welcome break from the monotony of their usual fellowships, while the rest of the non-Rotary movie goers have an opportunity to learn about Rotary, and how they can contribute towards making the world a better place, especially for the less privileged.
Courtesy of Nile Breweries Ltd., the Club gets a half page advert, in one of the leading dailies, publicising the movie night fundraising initiative, while Olive Garden Hotel and Cineplex regularly offer complimentary prizes for 5 lucky movie goers every month.
From the movie ticket sales, alone, we can only cover a third of the monthly medical outreach camp expenses. As such, the Club has adopted a new approach to raise money through the movie night, by selling “Movie Night Branding Rights” to one Corporate per quarter. The Corporate will then leverage on the exposure and branding opportunities at the movie night (Cinema Hall entrance, walls, etc) including publicity at any project of the Corporate’s choice, which could also double as the Corporate’s Staff CSR Day Out.
Special thanks to Barclays Bank who bought the inaugural “Movie Night Branding Rights” at all the 4 Cinema Halls at Garden City, through their MADD (Make a Difference Day) CSR drive. A total of UGX. 16 million ($7,000) was raised towards supporting a literacy project at St. Mbaga Tuzinde Kiwatule Primary School.
This serves as a special call to Corporates to join the CSR drive by booking their “Movie Night Branding Rights” while stock lasts…
