Mom, What’s a Sock Hop?

In the 1950’s, high school dances were held in the gymnasium.  To protect the floor, delighted students were required to remove their shoes.  Later these informal dances were called Record Hops, after the vinyl discs that were played by disc jockeys (DJ’s) for dancing. These informal settings part of the beginning stages of Rock’n’Roll.

The Rotary Club of West Springfield will be holding their annual NovemberFest, sponsored by PeoplesBank, on November 11, 2011 at the Springfield Country Club.  The theme this year will be a tribute to the 50’s era.  Attendees are invited to dress in clothing of the 50’s (remember Saddle Shoes, bee hive hair, poodle skirts, and limbo?) and bring your own yo-yo.  A local doo wop group, “In Time”, will sing and there will be a hula hoop contest.  The Rotarians will hold a live and a silent auction and there will be beer from several local breweries and wine tasting from Lyons Package store. Hot hors d’oeuvres will be served by the Country Club.

Join us for a look back at the optimistic 50’s when Rock’n’Roll was young and everything, including the moon, seemed possible.  Tickets are available for $30.00 in advance and $35 at the door.
