National Nurses Week
National Nurses Week

As a young RN, Scheerle saw the need for innovation in nursing and for keeping great nurses at the bedside. Her knowledge and passion about these issues shaped her career as a nationally recognized business and healthcare leader. In 1982, Scheerle founded American Nursing Services, Inc., a successful supplemental staffing agency. When she sold the company two decades later, it had grown to 28 locations.

A graduate of Harvard Business School’s Executive Program, Scheerle has received many civic, business and professional awards. A founder of the Great 100 Nurses Celebration, she has also been a recipient of the Humanitarian of the Year Award from the American Red Cross Southeast Chapter, and the American Business Ethics Award from the Society of Financial Service Professionals. She was inducted into the Junior Achievement Business Hall of Fame and was a New Orleans CityBusiness Woman of the Year for three consecutive years and named Healthcare Hero in 2013. Scheerle served as Chairman of the Young Presidents Organization for Louisiana and a member of its Southern Regional Board.

Scheerle continues to focus on creating trust and commitment among nurses and patients—and empowering her team with a vision around the work of the nurse that inspires excellence in a variety of settings.

Project For Lady Vets
On May 11, 2017, partly in celebration of Mother’s Day, the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System will hold its first annual Ladies Night.

Ladies Night will be a special program to honor and celebrate our female Veterans.  Female Veterans will be invited to the new hospital to see everything the new facility has to offer, learn about services, and be treated to a fun evening of pampering, empowerment, and learning in a safe space.

The Rotary Clubs of New Orleans and Mid-City, in a joint effort, have agreed to bring gift bags for the women veterans who attend the event.  During the month of April and first week of May, we will collect from our membership a list of items for the gift bags. Cash contributions would also be greatly appreciated.  Final deadline will be Wednesday, May 3.

  • Moisturizing Lotion (travel size)
  • Hand Sanitizer (travel size)
  • Lip gloss or balm
  • Mascara
  • Finger nail polish
  • Nail polish remover (travel size preferred)
  • Finger nail file (colorful one preferred)
  • Compact mirror (purse size)
  • Sweet treats
Please contact Monique Gardner for any questions regarding this project.
Nurses Week
Nurses week will be celebrated at the club on May 3rd and we will again "kiss a nurse" for NORFI.

Neutral Ground Maintenance--You Are Needed!

The neutral ground is located on Poydras Street between Tchoupitoulas Street and South Peters Street. The new signs make it easy to see where you need to go. Two or three Rotarians are scheduled each week, but you can get creative and have others help if you wish. If you cannot work during the scheduled week, try to switch off with someone else. During your week, the deal is to pick up trash or broken limbs you find on the neutral ground. You can bring your own garbage bag and gloves. The trash pick up takes less than 15 minutes but be careful on the busy street. After you are finished, just throw the garbage bag into one of the public trash containers on Poydras Street.

Week of 05/01/2017, Hilton Bell, Shayne Benedetto
Week of 05/08/2017, Chad Burg, Knud Berthelsen

During the year, we will arrange to do more gardening work on the neutral ground and go to lunch afterward.

REMEMBER that in addition to keeping up this stretch of Poydras Street, this is a great way to get to know your fellow Rotarians. Also, if you cannot perform your assigned task think about getting a group of younger folks to handle it for you. They can be Interactors, high schoolers looking for community service hours or just folks looking for a way to get involved.
