This Week's Speaker
Jun 28, 2017
6840 District Governor Elect

Governor Elect Kathie Short Kathie is a member of the Rotary Club of Pass Christian, MS. She became an Honorary Member in 2000 and a member in 2006. She has served her club in numerous positions as President (2008-2009), Foundation Chair and Grants Chair and has held several positions in District 6840 including Grants Chair 2008-2014, Assistant Governor 2010-2015, Deputy Governor 2014-2015, Conference Treasurer, Conference Registration Chair, and featured speaker at the Rotary International Convention in New Orleans. She is a multiple Paul Harris Fellow and member of the Bequest Society. Following Hurricane Katrina she traveled with her husband Rotarian Dr. D.H. Short (1939-2008) to twenty two states and two countries to bring awareness to the recovery of Pass Christian and District 6840. Through generous donations made by fellow Rotarians, The Rotary Foundation and the Rotary Club of Pass Christian sponsored recovery projects including the building of thirty two homes by the Mennonite Disaster Services, donation of two dump trucks to the City, walking track with exercise equipment and handicapped playground in the local park, special needs computer lab in city library, children and adult books in the library, bathroom in the park, and educational classes for adults to complete their GED. She is a board member and secretary/treasurer at Memorial Hospital Gulfport. Kathie is involved in medical, community and humanitarian organizations including Mississippi State Medical Association Alliance (Past President), American Medical Association(Legislation Committee), Coast Medical Alliance (Past President) American Cancer Society (Executive Leadership Council), Past Christian Historical Society (President 2005-2008), and Deaconess of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) Gulfport, Mississippi.

Neutral Ground Maintenance--You Are Needed!

The neutral ground is located on Poydras Street between Tchoupitoulas Street and South Peters Street. The new signs make it easy to see where you need to go. Two or three Rotarians are scheduled each week, but you can get creative and have others help if you wish. If you cannot work during the scheduled week, try to switch off with someone else. During your week, the deal is to pick up trash or broken limbs you find on the neutral ground. You can bring your own garbage bag and gloves. The trash pick up takes less than 15 minutes but be careful on the busy street. After you are finished, just throw the garbage bag into one of the public trash containers on Poydras Street.

Week of 06/26/2017, Jim Carter, Alan Case
Week of 07/03/2017, Bob Clark, Philip Claverie

During the year, we will arrange to do more gardening work on the neutral ground and go to lunch afterward.

REMEMBER that in addition to keeping up this stretch of Poydras Street, this is a great way to get to know your fellow Rotarians. Also, if you cannot perform your assigned task think about getting a group of younger folks to handle it for you. They can be Interactors, high schoolers looking for community service hours or just folks looking for a way to get involved.
