Turning Adversity into Opportunity
Turning Adversity into Opportunity

Amber Olsen BIO

Amber Olsen is the mother to three daughters. In 2016, her youngest daughter Willow was diagnosed with Multiple Sulfatase Deficiency(MSD), an ultra rare, terminal genetic condition. Since the diagnosis, Amber formed the United MSD Foundation (501c3), assisted in forming an independent Scientific Advisory Board of experts, joined together with three global sister organizations, and is pushing forward the first ever Phase I Clinical trial for MSD slated to begin early 2020.  Olsen is the chief fundraising officer for the organization and will not stop until every child with MSD has an opportunity to live a healthy life without limitations. Amber and her husband, Tom Cannan, have resided in the beautiful and giving community of South Mississippi for the last 18 years with their three wonderful daughters, Kylee (16), Jenna (12), and Willow (5).

In her professional career, Amber founded Nextaff Gulf Coast in Ocean Springs, MS in 2007 to offer recruiting services for businesses in South Mississippi. Amber is certified by the Human Resource Certification Institute as a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR).  Amber is originally from Missoula, Montana where she earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Business in 1998 from University of Montana. Amber has held various community leadership positions, including most recently as a member of the board of Directors of the Mississippi Center for Medical Fragile Children, a collaborative initiative with First Lady of Mississippi, Deborah Bryant.

NOHSEP/GNOF Hurricane Tabletop Exercise
The City of New Orleans – Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Preparedness (NOHSEP) and the Greater New Orleans Foundation (GNOF) is co-hosting a table-top exercise for our nonprofit disaster response and recovery organization partners on May 20th, 2019.

Our club has been extended two seats to participate.  Randy Feldman is planning to attend.  If any of you would like to take the 2nd available slot and attend with Randy please let him know.

Tabletop exercises are discussion-based sessions where participants meet in an informal, classroom setting to discuss their roles and capabilities during an emergency and their responses to a particular emergency situation. NOHSEP staff will also be present to share information on the City's plans for operations, response and recovery in the event of a hurricane.

Neutral Ground Maintenance--You Are Needed!

The neutral ground is located on Poydras Street between Tchoupitoulas Street and South Peters Street. The Rotary signs make it easy to see where you need to go. Two or three Rotarians are scheduled each week, but you can get creative and have others help if you wish. If you cannot work during the scheduled week, try to switch off with someone else. During your week, the deal is to pick up trash or broken limbs you find on the neutral ground. You can bring your own garbage bag and gloves. The trash pick up takes less than 15 minutes but be careful on the busy street. After you are finished, just throw the garbage bag into one of the public trash containers on Poydras Street.

Week of 04/08/19  Paige Miller, Aaron Miscenich
Week of 04/15/19  Deborah Moench, Patty Monju

During the year, we will arrange to do more gardening work on the neutral ground and go to lunch afterward.

REMEMBER that in addition to keeping up this stretch of Poydras Street, this is a great way to get to know your fellow Rotarians. Also, if you cannot perform your assigned task think about getting a group of younger folks to handle it for you. They can be Interactors, high schoolers looking for community service hours or just folks looking for a way to get involved.
