Multiculturalism
Multiculturalism

Nguyen, a community activist and change agent in New Orleans East, founded VIET in 2001 out of a desire to serve others. The organization is the first statewide nonprofit established to target Vietnamese communities and works "to help mainstream the Vietnamese community into the American society and to bridge the gap as it relates to cultural and language barriers." VIET also develops educational and economic training programs for minority residents of Louisiana.

Under Nguyen's leadership, VIET's core initiatives include the operation of one of the largest summer camps in the City of New Orleans, which serves more than 400 youth ages 3 to 16. VIET also facilitates an after school program for non-English speaking youth and a weekly program for senior citizens. The organization is also working to open an Early Head Start center in Michoud, which would serve as the first center of this sort to open in the area since Hurricane Katrina.

Nguyen is one of 24 community leaders from New Orleans who was recently awarded a three-year fellowship with the W.K. Kellogg Foundation Community Leadership Network, which targets and develops transformative leaders who are dedicated to social change in their communities to help children and families obtain optimal health and well-being, academic achievement and financial security.

Council President Head said, "Cyndi is a dynamic leader in many areas in the City. She pays attention to the needs of the communities she serves and is providing outstanding leadership in areas such as education, youth and personal enrichment, business, and advocacy for Vietnamese communities and non-English speaking individuals. We are honored to have her working in New Orleans East."

Disaster Relief Efforts

Good Afternoon All!!

Disaster Relief Efforts in Texas and Possibly Louisiana

Please advise your clubs via e mail this afternoon that directions and suggestions for disaster relief efforts from the clubs are forthcoming from District Governor, Kathie Short.

District 6840 has a Disaster Relief Plan in place and it is suggested that clubs visit the District 6840 Disaster Plan on District 6840 website before moving forward.

Rotary International and District 6840 District Governor are currently working on contacting the District Governors of Houston and Corpus Christi, Texas to determine needs.

District 6840 Disaster Relief Coordinators Trey Campbell of Mississippi   trey@cclynch.com   and Michael Bourg of Louisiana    flossmike@yahoo.com  are fully engaged in this process.

An e mail is now being prepared to send out to the clubs in the next 24 hours to advise them of actions and suggestions that they can take for suggested projects.

Money can be donated to The District 6840 Foundation marked "Disaster Relief".  The District 6840 Foundation Committee has a plan in place to distribute these funds through a grant process that is quick, easy, and efficient, for which the clubs may apply.

Remember, that a coordinated effort is better than a splintered effort.  We can do more together than individually.

Finally, remember, that Rotary is not a first responder organization to disasters.  Other agencies are much better equipped and trained to do this.  What we do well, is to develop projects that are sustainable and will last over a period of time.  Not just a one time deal.

 Thank you!!!!

Steve

Neutral Ground Maintenance--You Are Needed!

The neutral ground is located on Poydras Street between Tchoupitoulas Street and South Peters Street. The new signs make it easy to see where you need to go. Two or three Rotarians are scheduled each week, but you can get creative and have others help if you wish. If you cannot work during the scheduled week, try to switch off with someone else. During your week, the deal is to pick up trash or broken limbs you find on the neutral ground. You can bring your own garbage bag and gloves. The trash pick up takes less than 15 minutes but be careful on the busy street. After you are finished, just throw the garbage bag into one of the public trash containers on Poydras Street.

Week of 08/28/2017, Joe Friend, Monique Gardner
Week of 09/04/2017, Robin Giarrusso, Cedric Grant

During the year, we will arrange to do more gardening work on the neutral ground and go to lunch afterward.

REMEMBER that in addition to keeping up this stretch of Poydras Street, this is a great way to get to know your fellow Rotarians. Also, if you cannot perform your assigned task think about getting a group of younger folks to handle it for you. They can be Interactors, high schoolers looking for community service hours or just folks looking for a way to get involved.
