This Week's Speaker

Greater New Orleans Foundation
Greater New Orleans Foundation

Andrew “Andy” Kopplin currently serves as president and CEO of the Greater New Orleans Foundation. He previously served as First Deputy Mayor and Chief Administrative Officer for the City of New Orleans under Mayor Mitch Landrieu from 2010-2016. In this capacity, he oversaw the day-to-day operational functions of City Hall. Kopplin previously worked at Teach For America, where he served as senior advisor to the Founder & CEO Wendy Kopp.  From October 2006-January 2008, Mr. Kopplin served as founding executive director of the Louisiana Recovery Authority (LRA), the agency charged with leading Louisiana’s recovery efforts after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, where he developed the strategy and built the bipartisan coalitions that more than doubled congressional appropriations for Louisiana’s rebuilding, from $13 billion to $28 billion. Before heading the LRA, Kopplin was chief of staff to two consecutive Louisiana governors, Democrat Kathleen Babineaux Blanco and Republican M.J. “Mike” Foster, Jr. He joined Foster’s staff in 1996 as policy director, and in that role led the pioneering effort to create the state’s community college system by building a collation of Republicans, Democrats, business, labor, educators, and students. Mr. Kopplin holds a bachelor’s degree from Rice University; a master’s in public policy from Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government, and is a 1986 Harry S. Truman Scholarship winner.

Homeless Veterans Service Project
The Rotary Club of New Orleans will be collecting donations of new and gently used men’s clothing and shoes along with new underclothes for homeless Veterans.  Clothing collected by Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System goes to support homeless Veterans across our healthcare network.  In New Orleans, the VA’s Homeless Program is run from the Community Resource and Referral Center (CRRC).  The Homeless Program provides multiple services for homeless Veterans including medical care, mental health care, housing, job placement assistance, showers and laundry services, and free clothing and other donations as provided by the community.

The club urges all members who have served or are serving in the military to step up and help lead this collection drive.

Please bring your donations to the next three Wednesday meetings- March 22, 29, and April 5.  Thank you!

Neutral Ground Maintenance--You Are Needed!

The neutral ground is located on Poydras Street between Tchoupitoulas Street and South Peters Street. The new signs make it easy to see where you need to go. Two or three Rotarians are scheduled each week, but you can get creative and have others help if you wish. If you cannot work during the scheduled week, try to switch off with someone else. During your week, the deal is to pick up trash or broken limbs you find on the neutral ground. You can bring your own garbage bag and gloves. The trash pick up takes less than 15 minutes but be careful on the busy street. After you are finished, just throw the garbage bag into one of the public trash containers on Poydras Street.

Week of 03/20/2017, Kay Wilkins, James Willeford
Week of 03/27/2017, Michael Willis, Hank Wolf

During the year, we will arrange to do more gardening work on the neutral ground and go to lunch afterward.

REMEMBER that in addition to keeping up this stretch of Poydras Street, this is a great way to get to know your fellow Rotarians. Also, if you cannot perform your assigned task think about getting a group of younger folks to handle it for you. They can be Interactors, high schoolers looking for community service hours or just folks looking for a way to get involved.
