U.S. District Judge Jay Zainey's many volunteer efforts have earned recognition from the New Orleans Archdiocese, reports the Archdiocese's official newspaper, the Clarion Herald.
Zainey was awarded the Saint John Paul II Award for his service to the Archdiocese.
Zainey has organized a monthly mass for parishioners with special needs, helped form a group that provides legal services the homeless, and works with Catholic Charities to help expedite court processes for immigrant children, the Clarion Herald reported.
Zainey, who was appointed to the federal bench in 2002 by President George W. Bush, said he came by his volunteer ethic through his father:
"Engaging and serving other people was what it was all about," Zainey said. "We learned that from my mom and dad. My dad quit law school when I was born because he had to raise a family. He was always sacrificing. He sold life insurance and he had his band and his music."
