This Week's Speaker
Aug 02, 2023
Kingfish U: Huey Long and LSU
Kingfish U: Huey Long and LSU

No political leader is more closely identified with Louisiana State University than the flamboyant governor and U.S. senator Huey P. Long, who devoted his last years to turning a small, undistinguished state school into an academic and football powerhouse. From 1931, when Long declared himself the “official thief” for LSU, to his death in 1935, the school’s budget mushroomed, its physical plant burgeoned, its faculty flourished, and its enrollment tripled. Robert Mann will talk about his new book about Long’s intense relationship with LSU, Kingfish U: Huey Long and LSU (published by LSU Press).

Robert Mann

Robert “Bob” Mann holds the Manship Chair at the Manship School of Mass Communication at Louisiana State University. He is the author of nine books, including critically acclaimed political histories of the U.S. civil rights movement, the Vietnam War, American wartime dissent, Ronald Reagan, and the 1964 presidential election. His new book is Kingfish U: Huey Long and LSU, published by LSU Press.

He has written for many national publications, including the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Boston Globe, Politico, Salon, Vox and Smithsonian magazine. From 2013 to 2018, he wrote a weekly political column in the New Orleans Times-Picayune. In the early 1980s, he covered Louisiana politics as a reporter for the Shreveport Journal and the Monroe News-Star

Before joining the LSU faculty in 2006, Bob spent more than 20 years in the political arena, as a senior aide to US senators Russell Long and John Breaux and Governor Kathleen Blanco. In 2014, he was inducted into the Louisiana Political Hall of Fame.

Backpack Drive 2023
Rotarians, it is that time of year again where we stuff backpacks full of school supplies so that children in New Orleans can return to school fully equipped and ready to learn. The cost of filling one bag can equal about $50, so you can imagine the financial burden for families with multiple children. However, when we fill bags en masse, we are able to do so more cost effectively.

If you are interested in stuffing bags, we will meet on August 2nd, immediately after our regularly scheduled meeting, 1-5pm at 1215 Prytania Street. Call Angel upon arrival 504.401.0164

If you are interested in sponsoring backpacks, you can simply log into ClubRunner and designate your $50 contribution(s) to NORFI for backpacks.

Last year, we raised over $4,000 and were able to send over 200 backpacks to three different organizations and one school! What an impact for the students of New Orleans. We hope you will consider contributing again this year to support us in exceeding our expectations once more.
2023 Big Game Raffle
Once again, our club will participate in selling Big Game Raffle tickets.  The proceeds from the ticket sales are used to help fund our charitable initiatives.  It’s really a fun way to donate to worthy causes.   There is a great list of prizes including tickets to LSU, Saints and Pelicans home games.  The tickets are still only $20 each with 100% of the money going to service projects.  There is a good chance to win one of over 50 prizes.  Last year, our club sold three winning tickets.

Tickets will be available at our weekly meeting or by mail if you prefer.  Please make checks payable to Rotary Club of New Orleans, or you can purchase tickets on-line by using Venmo, Zelle or a credit card through the Norfi website.  The drawing will be held on August 24th.  Contact Karl at 713-503-0401 or kkoppy23@gmail.com if you have any questions or need additional tickets.

Thanks for your continued support.

The Four Way Test

The Four-Way Test is a nonpartisan and nonsectarian ethical guide for Rotarians to use for their personal and professional relationships. The test has been translated into more than 100 languages, and Rotarians recite it at club meetings:
Of the things we think, say or do:

1.     Is it the TRUTH?

2.     Is it FAIR to all concerned?

3.     Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?

4.     Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
