New Orleans City Park
New Orleans City Park

Dr. Robert Becker has been the CEO of City Park for fifteen years and has been credited with dramatically improving the park’s financial condition and developing a new vision for the park’s future.  Becker is credited not only with repairing the catastrophic damage done by Hurricane Katrina in 2005 but also remaking the park into one of the top public parks in the United States.  Since the storm, Becker has put together a public-private financing plan that has raised more than $122 million to repair damage and implement the Master Plan.  Prior to his work in City Park, Becker was the Senior Vice President for the Audubon Nature Institute and was the Executive Director of the New Orleans City Planning Commission during most of the 1980”s.  Becker is a Fellow of the American Institute of Certified City Planners and an Adjunct professor at the University of New Orleans.  He has received numerous awards throughout his career including the 2010 National Planning Award honoring the park’s recovery effort, being selected as the 2012 Distinguished Alumnus from the University Of New Orleans College Of Liberal Arts, and being honored as a “Hero of the Recovery” by New Orleans Magazine on the 10th Anniversary of Katrina.   He has a B.A. in History from the University at Buffalo, an M.A. in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Iowa, and a PhD from the University of New Orleans in Urban Studies.

Junior Achievement Service Project
On behalf of Junior Achievement of Greater New Orleans, I would like to extend a huge thank you to you for offering your time and knowledge to the students of Mary D. Coghill Charter School!  Both students and teachers were excited to have JA volunteers as mentors in their classrooms, and the day was a great success.  I encourage you all to continue to inspire young minds through Junior Achievement’s educational programming.  Feel free to contact me with any questions about further opportunities to serve!

New Orleans Rotary has a FACEBOOK page

The club is on Facebook in two different ways and we encourage everyone to connect in both ways. We have a Facebook PAGE that is public and meant as a way for us to show the rest of the world what we do, including convincing prospective members that we are worth joining. Please like the page if you haven't already, and invite others to like it too!
We also have a Facebook GROUP that is only for members and not accessible to others. The purpose of this group is to share information with fellow members, and ask for help when there is something you think other members can help with. Think of it as the fun bucket, just free (but you can always donate to NORFI if you want). Also think of it as somewhere to share something that you think is not quite important or club-relevant enough that you would email all the members about it, but you DO want people to know. Shameless self-promotion is perfectly acceptable.
The Facebook PAGE that is open for all is at https://www.facebook.com/RotaryNewOrleans/
The Facebook GROUP that is only open to members is at https://www.facebook.com/groups/289140871203308/

Neutral Ground Maintenance--You Are Needed!

The neutral ground is located on Poydras Street between Tchoupitoulas Street and South Peters Street. The new signs make it easy to see where you need to go. Two or three Rotarians are scheduled each week, but you can get creative and have others help if you wish. If you cannot work during the scheduled week, try to switch off with someone else. During your week, the deal is to pick up trash or broken limbs you find on the neutral ground. You can bring your own garbage bag and gloves. The trash pick up takes less than 15 minutes but be careful on the busy street. After you are finished, just throw the garbage bag into one of the public trash containers on Poydras Street.

Week of 01/30/2017, Kenny Taylor, Matthew Theriot
Week of 02/06/2017, Anthony Tocco, Travis Tresca

During the year, we will arrange to do more gardening work on the neutral ground and go to lunch afterward.

REMEMBER that in addition to keeping up this stretch of Poydras Street, this is a great way to get to know your fellow Rotarians. Also, if you cannot perform your assigned task think about getting a group of younger folks to handle it for you. They can be Interactors, high schoolers looking for community service hours or just folks looking for a way to get involved.
