SandyRosenthal founded Levees.org with her 15 yeard old son Stanford, in Lafayette, Louisiana while she and her family were evacuated from New Orleans in the fall of 2005. Ever since the levee failures and flooding during Hurricane Katrina, Sandy has worked nonstop to separate the facts from the fairy tale. In sustainable ways, she has driven a campaign to ensure that the narrative portrays the flood event as due to the negligent acts of man. The nonprofit has over 25,000 supporters and chapters in five states in addition to a strong social media following.
Rosenthal is putting final touches on her 140,000 manuscript on why she founded Levees.org and what, as a group, was accomplished.
Last month, Levees.org unveiled the Flooded House Museum at the breach site of the London Avenue Canal that tells the story of the levee breaches. Levees.org hosts an annual guided Levee Breach Bike Tour every May. These are just a few of the many ways that Levees.org separates fact from fiction.
For those efforts, Rosenthal has been honored with numerous awards most recently including Outstanding Social Entrepreneur of the Year from Tulane University, but also Most Influential Woman from Mount Holyoke College and the Hall of Fame Award of the Louisiana Center for Women and Government.
Rosenthal, an advocate for the 55% of the American population living in counties protected by levees, blogged for the Huffington Post for a decade. Rosenthal has been married to Steve Rosenthal since 1979 and has three adult children: Aliisa, Mark and Stanford and one granddaughter, Ellie. She also has two small dogs named Twinkie and Cupcake.

With a fresh score by Tim Minchin and heralded book by Dennis Kelley, MATILDA is a musical that will captivate audiences of all ages. MATILDA's cast is comprised of amazing young talent and much-loved professional actors from the Greater New Orleans area. This is a show that will speak to both kids and adults.

Once again the Rotary Club of New Orleans will partner with Kingsley House-Columbia Parc and NOPD to sponsor the School Supply Backpack Project to provide school supplies for low income children in our community. All members are encouraged to help make this project a huge success by filling a backpack with school supplies from the supply list or donating money to purchase backpacks and supplies. Backpacks and supply lists are available at the Wednesday meetings. Filled backpacks should be returned no later than August 7th for distribution on August 10th.

The neutral ground is located on Poydras Street between Tchoupitoulas Street and South Peters Street. The Rotary signs make it easy to see where you need to go. Two or three Rotarians are scheduled each week, but you can get creative and have others help if you wish. If you cannot work during the scheduled week, try to switch off with someone else. During your week, the deal is to pick up trash or broken limbs you find on the neutral ground. You can bring your own garbage bag and gloves. The trash pick up takes less than 15 minutes but be careful on the busy street. After you are finished, just throw the garbage bag into one of the public trash containers on Poydras Street.

During the year, we will arrange to do more gardening work on the neutral ground and go to lunch afterward.
REMEMBER that in addition to keeping up this stretch of Poydras Street, this is a great way to get to know your fellow Rotarians. Also, if you cannot perform your assigned task think about getting a group of younger folks to handle it for you. They can be Interactors, high schoolers looking for community service hours or just folks looking for a way to get involved.

Angel Chung Cutno has always been passionate about humanitarian work. She graduated from LSU and began her teaching career in Houma, LA before moving to California. There, she gained experience in community organizing, non-profits, and leadership in RotarAct alongside Rotary of Long Beach,CA. Angel recently moved back to Louisiana with her husband and became immediately involved as director of 24 Carrot Youth Garden. As an advocate for educational justice, she volunteers with OPSB’s Ed Council and Organizing Network for Education. Angel holds roles on the boards of Front Yard Bikes, St. Roch Improvement Assoc., and Rotary; and recently became involved with the Asian/Pacific American Society.
Angel works at New Orleans Boulder Lounge (NOBL) as the Programs Director thus allowing her to combine her passions for community engagement and rock climbing.
