Recent projects at New Orleans Museum of Art

Mel Buchanan is the RosaMary Curator of Decorative Arts & Design at the New Orleans Museum of Art, in charge of the interpretation, installation, and growth of the museum's wide-ranging decorative arts collection. At NOMA she has curated several original exhibitions including Bror Anders Wikstrom: Bringing Fantasy to Carnival (2017) and Personalities in Clay: American Studio Ceramics from the E. John Bullard Collection (2017). In 2018 she completed the multi-year project to entirely reinstall the decorative arts permanent collection galleries, including 20th-century design for the first time in NOMA's history. A native of Indiana, Buchanan worked at The RISD Museum in Providence, Rhode Island, and as Assistant Curator of 20th-century Design at the Milwaukee Art Museum before moving to New Orleans in 2013. Mel earned a degree in American Studies from Yale University and a masters from the Winterthur Program in American Material Culture at the University of Delaware. Mel and her architect husband are raising two small children and a rescue dog in a fixer-upper New Orleans house.

Warren Easton - Students In Transition Center
To All Rotary Club of New Orleans Members:

I am writing to let you know about a new project that NORFI is sponsoring to assist Warren Easton students especially impacted by circumstances surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic.

There are a number of students who have found themselves in very tentative living conditions, some even homeless, due to the effects which this virus has had on our economy.  They have very basic needs such as food, clothing and personal hygiene items.

In what I believe to be a very proactive move, Warren Easton has provided a classroom dedicated to helping these students meet their needs.  It is equipped with a clothes washer/dryer, refrigerator and a storage area for food and other supplies. The school’s faculty and staff are extremely close to their students and are aware of the particular circumstances each one is experiencing.  No student can be expected to learn when they are hungry or deprived of everyday necessities. Unfortunately, the economic impacts from this pandemic will be felt for the unforeseeable future. Access to and use of this room will be closely monitored.

I understand very well that each of us has been inundated with requests for donations over the past months.  For the first time in its history the NORFI Board has voted to match dollar for dollar any contribution to this project up to a maximum of $10,000.

Our Club has always had a special connection with Warren Easton.  I hope you will consider this earnest request.

Donations can be made by credit card directly through the NORFI website at: https://norfinola.org/donate/

Yours in the Spirit of Rotary,

Mary
