Why a successful New York lawyer moved to New Orleans
Dr. Estrada de Martin focuses her practice on U.S. and foreign patent prosecution in the life science, biotechnology and plant fields, patent interferences, patent portfolio growth and management, patentability assessments, biosimilar assessments and strategy, non-infringement and invalidity opinions, IP due diligence, pre-suit investigation and litigation support for life sciences and plant matters. In addition, she represents small to mid-size businesses, educational institutions and nonprofits in intellectual property transactional and licensing matters.
Dr. Estrada de Martin was formerly with WilmerHale in New York and was adjunct faculty at New York Law School, where she served as the patent law mentor in the IP Jobtrack at the Institute for Information Law and Policy.
Prior to joining WilmerHale, Dr. Estrada de Martin was a post-doctoral fellow in the Department of Ophthalmology at Weill Medical College of Cornell University, where she investigated the sorting and targeting of apical membrane proteins in RPE and MDCK cells in the laboratory of Dr. Enrique Rodriguez-Boulan. In the summer of 1997, Dr. Estrada de Martin interned at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. From 1998 to 2004, she served as a teaching assistant at Yale University while pursuing her graduate studies in cell biology.
Hello, all. If you were at the meeting this past Wednesday, you heard about ROTARY RESPONDS. This is a service initiative of the Rotary Club of New Orleans (RCNO). Its goal is to assist when emergency situations arise so that help is received quickly and effectively by using the manpower of the RCNO and the expertise of its members.
Committee Members include: Jeff Hamm, Dottie Nelson, Monique Gardner, Brian Mora, Mike Bourg, Bob Heaps, Susan Simon, Ernesto Carballo, Jr., Peter Waring, Henry Lowentritt, Joshua Joachim, Randall Feldman.
We are working on a number of potential projects. The outline of one of them is as follows:
Partner with a storage facility or company that has secure warehouse capacity that will commit to store donated building materials, tools, blankets, tents, children’s items, and non-perishable food and water, etc. The goal is to have enough merchandise to fill an 18-wheeler.
Partner with a trucking company or business with trucks that will commit to provide the truck and personnel to drive to the disaster area.
RCNO will supply personnel to load and unload the truck.
RCNO will partner with local clubs, and districts, the Rotary District 6840 Foundation to determine who the merchandise will go to, e.g. families or intermediaries like the Red Cross. Top priority will be to provide support at local disasters. However, depending on the Club and the merchandise donors, food and materials could go outside the immediate area. The Club will create a policy for when and how this process will work.
Acknowledgements. The Club will create a temporary use logo for the truck when it is being used. The project will be called ROTARY RESPONDS and will include the logo of the RCNO, the trucking company, the storage facility, and others as appropriate.
Rotary District 6840 Foundation may want to take part by making grants for the merchandise.
The RCNO will develop a promotion plan.
We are at the stage that we need to know the feasibility of finding free storage space. We estimate about 1,600 sq. ft. with five feet vertical. We can be flexible about this.
So, the question is do you know of some company that might have available storage area and partner with us? If so, please let me know.
The City of New Orleans – Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Preparedness (NOHSEP) and the Greater New Orleans Foundation (GNOF) is co-hosting a table-top exercise for our nonprofit disaster response and recovery organization partners on May 20th, 2019.
Our club has been extended two seats to participate. Randy Feldman is planning to attend. If any of you would like to take the 2nd available slot and attend with Randy please let him know.
Tabletop exercises are discussion-based sessions where participants meet in an informal, classroom setting to discuss their roles and capabilities during an emergency and their responses to a particular emergency situation. NOHSEP staff will also be present to share information on the City's plans for operations, response and recovery in the event of a hurricane.

• Parking is available at the K&B Plaza building, instructions will be provided after registration
The neutral ground is located on Poydras Street between Tchoupitoulas Street and South Peters Street. The Rotary signs make it easy to see where you need to go. Two or three Rotarians are scheduled each week, but you can get creative and have others help if you wish. If you cannot work during the scheduled week, try to switch off with someone else. During your week, the deal is to pick up trash or broken limbs you find on the neutral ground. You can bring your own garbage bag and gloves. The trash pick up takes less than 15 minutes but be careful on the busy street. After you are finished, just throw the garbage bag into one of the public trash containers on Poydras Street.

During the year, we will arrange to do more gardening work on the neutral ground and go to lunch afterward.
REMEMBER that in addition to keeping up this stretch of Poydras Street, this is a great way to get to know your fellow Rotarians. Also, if you cannot perform your assigned task think about getting a group of younger folks to handle it for you. They can be Interactors, high schoolers looking for community service hours or just folks looking for a way to get involved.
