Understanding the Challenges in Disaster Philanthropy

After a disaster people want to help, but they don't always know how. In this presentation we'll explore how to be better prepared to respond with time, talent and treasure after a disaster. The speaker will situate the talk in the context of individual and institutional philanthropy, so you can understand the who, what, where, when, why and how of giving in crises.

Tanya Gulliver-Garcia brings practical, lived, academic and philanthropic understandings of disasters to her work as the Center for Disaster Philanthropy’s director of advisory and education services. Tanya is a self-described “disaster junkie” who is passionate about ensuring the most marginalized and oppressed in our communities can recover and build resilience.

Tanya was born and raised in a small town about 1.5 hours northeast of Toronto and became involved with Rotary as a competitor in their youth public speaker contests in the early 1980s. She was her local Rotary club's designate to the Adventures in Citizenship program in the nation's capital city, Ottawa, in 1985. She has spoken to several Rotary clubs in the US and Canada. Tanya has lived in the Broadmoor neighborhood since 2015.
