John D. Fitzmorris III, Ph.D. is an Adjunct Professor of History at the University of New Orleans and the University of Holy Cross.  A native of New Orleans, he received his B.A. from L.S.U. in 1989, an M.A. in Religious Studies from Loyola University in New Orleans, and an M.A. in History from the University of New Orleans..  After a career of more than twenty years teaching in the Archdiocesan high schools, he returned to school and earned a Doctorate in History from the University of Southern Mississippi in 2016, where his dissertation was “Bearing the Double Burden: Chaplains and the Problem of Combat in Vietnam.”

A recipient of the George F. Windell Prize for Outstanding Thesis from the University of New Orleans, Dr. Fitzmorris currently teaches U.S. History, Louisiana History, Civil War & Reconstruction, Irish History, and the History of the Vietnam War. He has served as Undergraduate Adviser and Moderator of the Phi Alpha Theta National History Honor Society at UNO.
