On September 30, 2021, RI President Shaker Metha joined Peter Maurer, the President of the International Committee of the Red Cross, and Izumi Nakamitsu, the Under Secretary General of the UN for a web event, “Eliminating the Existential Threat of Nuclear Weapons”

During the event, President Metha stressed the need for Rotary International to spread awareness and education about the dangers of nuclear weapons while remaining impartial and non-political.

Taking direction from President Metha's initiative, members of the WE Rotary Club of International Peace will provide a 30 minute briefing on growing awareness of nuclear weapons as Rotarians.

This briefing is especially timely because of the  urgency of our current situation.  Experts like former US Defense Secretary William Perry and the advisory panel at the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists are warning us that the danger of nuclear war is greater now than at the worst periods of the Cold War. And recent studies show that even a limited nuclear war would have catastrophic worldwide consequences.

Members from the WE Rotary Club of International peace will highlight the devastating humanitarian and environmental impacts of nuclear weapons, the possible role of the Rotary club in reducing this threat, and historical precedent at Rotary Club International for playing a pivotal role in creating a world without nuclear weapons.
